Lot Title:
1936-D NGC MS-66 FB.
Description:
This is an intriguing coin that invites closer inspection of the surfaces, since at first glance, the luster seems "different" than expected of a dime of this era. Under magnification, it is easy to realize that the obverse die was rusted at one time, and extensive polishing was necessary to remove the tiny pits and defects, remainders of which show up as tiny raised dots in the obverse left field and on Liberty's cheek. The die polish shows as extensive vertical hairlines (not be confused with cleaning, of course), and in some ways, the resulting luster is reminiscent of that seen on matte proof coins. Meticulous preservation has brought this Depression survivor down to us in nearly unblemished condition, with nary a scratch or mark to deny the MS-66 FB grade assigned by NGC. A gorgeous Mercury dime, fully white on the obverse and just a hint off-white on the reverse.
