Lot Title: 1938 New Rochelle. NGC MS-65.
Description: In the realm of rare coins, a higher grade does not necessarily always equate to a better coin, certainly not from the standpoint of aesthetics. Here is a 1938 New Rochelle commemorative half-dollar that is certified by NGC as grading only MS-65. That all by itself is hardly impressive since there literally thousands of examples in higher grades. What is most impressive, however, is the enormous eye-appeal generated by the glowing, throbbing iridescent tone that dominates this majestic gem and generates eye-appeal far beyond the limits of a mere numeric "grade". How this coin failed to earn a "star" from NGC could be a question for the numismatic sages.

An astonishing and complex progression of iridescent bands paints the top of the obverse with a subtle combination of sea-green and olive-drab, but quickly modulates through a sequence of hues to arrive at a vivid swath of burnished royal-gold patina. Then, about midway down, patina lightens considerably and drapes the calf in silver-bronze tone, finally reverting back to a gradually deepening crescent of teal and indigo-green along the lower reaches. Truly, words cannot describe here what the eye sees! The reverse displays a similar and complementary toning progression, except that it succeeds in achieving a particularly lovely and vivid shade of iridescent lime-green illumination near the denomination, and the stunning effect is like that of multicolored light shining out upon the distant flower. Either side of the reverse is draped in deeper earth-tones that provide a warm and embracing atmosphere for the whole artistic effect. Truly stunning coins are truly rare, and this one certainly qualifies for the Scotsman Cataloger's Choice award.
