(About The Images)
1908 PCGS MS-64. 1908 PCGS MS-64.
Lot Title: 1908 PCGS MS-64.
Description: Temptingly close to a full MS-65 grade, as the surfaces present finely textured glowing lemon-gold eye-appeal and exquisitely sharp obverse details. Minor softness at the eagle's shoulder suggests a new obverse die mated with an aging reverse die, and the resulting mismatch in detail quality may have led to the conservative PCGS MS-64 grade. There seems to be no doubt that overall, the quality is exceptional and at the top end of MS-64.
Low Estimate: $1,100.00
High Estimate: $1,250.00
Lot Status: Bidding has been closed for this lot.
Hammered Price: $1,203.00

1004The Collectors' Auction - 2014 on 10/17/2014$425.00
1908 PCGS MS-62.
Young Bonnie Lass Collection. As usual for this better date, the obverse has been well struck, but the reverse carries the softness typically seen at the eagle's shoulder for 1908. Great color...
925The Midwest Summer Sale 2014 on 07/18/2014$240.00
1908 PCGS AU-55.
Butterscotch accents show where slight rub places the grade at AU-55. Evidence of a strong die clash shows at the Indian's chin.
926The Midwest Summer Sale 2014 on 07/18/2014$725.00
1908 PCGS MS-63.
An excellent choice example of the premier issue, with blistering detail on the obverse and a fair amount of striking intricacy on the reverse. Marvelously well preserved, as both sides retain...
1060The Collectors' Auction 2013 on 10/18/2013$450.00
1908 NGC MS-62.
Glittering surfaces overall display ideal medium-gold patina. As usual for 1908, sharpness for the obverse exceeds that of the reverse, with a small tick noticeable at the corner of the Indian's...
1061The Collectors' Auction 2013 on 10/18/2013$775.00
1908 NGC MS-63.
Noticeable improvement over coins graded a point lower includes very attractive glittering surface texture, and very exacting detail struck over the obverse. Considerable luster emanates from all the...
1096The Midwest Summer Sale on 07/26/2013$875.00
1908 AU-55, 1909 AU-58, and 1927 AU-58, all PCGS.
The PCGS AU grade level adequately conveys light wear for this trio of quarter-eagles, though at a glance (without the benefit of a loupe), one could easily mistake these for mint-state. Included...
1097The Midwest Summer Sale on 07/26/2013$1,050.00
1908 NGC MS-61, 1912 NGC MS-61, and 1912 NGC MS-62.
Barbara U'Dell Gold Collection. In each case, typical small abrasions seem to be responsible for the less-than-choice assigned grades. Three coin lot.
1098The Midwest Summer Sale on 07/26/2013$2,750.00
1908, 1911, and 1914, all PCGS MS-62.
At the MS-62 grade, 1914 becomes a considerably better date in the series, and is considered the next key after 1911-D. This group features a scissors-sharp example, limited in grade only by a...
1099The Midwest Summer Sale on 07/26/2013$500.00
1908 PCGS MS-62.
Bring home the bacon with a better date within the series (at least for MS-62), and get a premium quality coin to boot. This 1908 offers an exceptionally clean obverse and only a few random hairlines...
1100The Midwest Summer Sale on 07/26/2013$1,700.00
1908 PCGS MS-63 (rattler).
Barbara U'Dell Gold Collection. As is so often seen for this issue, the obverse features an amazingly sharp, highly detailed strike while the reverse shows some central softness, especially at the...
1101The Midwest Summer Sale on 07/26/2013$1,400.00
1908 NGC MS-64.
Frosty with gem-like matte luster, but a few too many contact marks on the reverse near IGWT to permit an upgrade. As always seems to be the case for 1908, the obverse shows pleasing overall...
1102The Midwest Summer Sale on 07/26/2013$1,400.00
1908 PCGS MS-64+.
The obverse has been struck with excellent precision, though this sharpness is curiously paired with a reverse that shows some lighter definition within the eagle's upper shoulder area. Nonetheless,...
1103The Midwest Summer Sale on 07/26/2013$1,050.00
1908 ICG MS-65.
Bright with admirable shimmering luster and a few dashes of amber-gold accents on either side. Evidence of a soft strike can be found on the reverse but this is not at all uncommon for 1908, and...
898The Collectors' Auction 2012 on 10/05/2012$900.00
1908 PCGS MS-63.
Remarkably clean for MS-63, the obverse offers some interesting flashy highpoint luster, while the reverse provides delightful matte texture, noticeable for the unusual subtle dull matte effect found...
899The Collectors' Auction 2012 on 10/05/2012$750.00
1908 PCGS MS-63+.
Frosty with tantalizing apricot-gold color. The Indian's cheekbone shows a couple of tiny swipes, and these may have decided the grade in favor of MS-63+ over a full "4", but there is no denying the...
812The Midwest Summer Sale 2012 on 07/27/2012$2,300.00
Six PCGS certified MS-62 Indian quarter-eagles.
One 1908 glitters with profuse luster, while the other displays subtle haze and lovely matte texture, and both coins are a little weakly struck. One 1925-D has delicate greyish patina over nicely...
814The Midwest Summer Sale 2012 on 07/27/2012$675.00
1908 and 1921, both NGC MS-61.
Dull surface quality and a mushy reverse explain the MS-61 grade for the 1908. The 1929 is better defined, but glossy. Two coin lot.
815The Midwest Summer Sale 2012 on 07/27/2012$1,200.00
1908 PCGS MS-64.
The Indian's cheek and portrait are exquisitely clean for the grade, with great definition evident in all the finest details. Curiously, sharpness on the reverse is considerably less prominent, as...
404The Collectors' Auction 2011 on 10/21/2011$900.00
1908 PCGS MS-63.
As often seems true of 1908, the obverse is very sharp, right down to the truble spots in the lowest feather, while the eagle has some softness at this shoulder. This coin is practically free from...
405The Collectors' Auction 2011 on 10/21/2011$1,350.00
1908 NGC MS-64.
A glittering sun-bright coin, the citrus-yellow surfaces are ablaze with flashy luster. Details are not fully brought up on either side, with the Indian's lowest feather and the eagle's shoulder...
406The Collectors' Auction 2011 on 10/21/2011$1,550.00
1908 PCGS MS-64+.
Both sides are marvelously clean, and the obverse is extremely well defined, although the eagle's shoulder has an unusually broad, soft area at the shoulder. A small scrape in this same area seems to...
1032The Midwest Summer Sale 2011 on 07/29/2011$600.00
1908 "bearded Indian" NGC MS-62.
Sunken-relief gold coins are noted for a virtually complete absence of popular die varieties, and that makes the rather prominent die clash seen on this one all the more interesting. Because the...
1033The Midwest Summer Sale 2011 on 07/29/2011$600.00
1908 "bearded Indian" PCGS MS-62.
Clashed dies seldom get their own nomenclature, but this is another 1908 quarter-eagle that displays a strongly raised ridge on the Indian's throat. Definition on the reverse is quite soft, possibly...
1034The Midwest Summer Sale 2011 on 07/29/2011$1,550.00
1908 NGC MS-64.
Each side is softly layered with very attractive lemon-gold overtones, ideally suited to the attractively lustrous surfaces. While the obverse displays nice sharpness, the reverse is a little...
802The Collectors' Auction 2010 on 10/15/2010$1,700.00
1908, 1927, and 1929, all MS-60.
1908 is not well struck at all and might downgrade to the upper AU level. The 1927 is straw-gold and delicately layered with mint frost and some hairlines, while 1929 is the best preserved of this...
977The Midwest Summer Sale 2010 on 07/23/2010$340.00
1908 NGC MS-61.
A little weakness of the reverse and a minor scratch on the Indian's cheek may have contrived to limit grade to MS-61, but may collectors will find the matte surface quality to be quite pleasing to...
978The Midwest Summer Sale 2010 on 07/23/2010$950.00
1908 and 1910 PCGS MS-62.
The 1908 is a shade darker than its 1910 companion, though the latter piece has the better strike and probably better luster as well. The 1908 displays a terrific die clash beneath the Indian's chin....
979The Midwest Summer Sale 2010 on 07/23/2010$3,000.00
1908 PCGS MS-65.
1908 serves admirably as a type representative for the quarter-eagle series, since it is the first date of issue, and high production ensures availability. Therefore, what better coin could there be...
736The Midwest Winter Sale on 02/12/2010$425.00
1908 PCGS MS-62.
Curious manufacturing circumstance paired a well defined obverse with a softly struck reverse to produce a coin of bipolar strike quality. Fortunately, this coin has remained well preserved, and the...
737The Midwest Winter Sale on 02/12/2010$550.00
1908 MS-62.
Softly struck on the eagle's shoulder, as is sometimes the case for this early Indian gold issue.
750The Collectors' Auction 2009 on 10/16/2009$422.00
1908 NGC MS-62.
Inexpertly struck, as the eagle's shoulder displays muted details.
1090The Midwest Summer Sale on 07/24/2009$600.00
1908, 1912 and 1913 NGC AU-58.
Each of these gold eagles is graded AU-58 by NGC, barely missing the uncirculated level. Included are: 1908, 1912 and 1913. Three coin lot.
1091The Midwest Summer Sale on 07/24/2009$1,450.00
1908 and 1926 MS-63.
A pair of Indian quarter-eagles, both certified as grading MS-63. The 1908 is in an NGC holder and the 1926 is in a PCGS holder. Two coin lot.
874The Midwest Winter Sale 2009 on 02/13/2009$2,900.00
1908 PCGS MS-65.
A mere suggestion of green iridescence can just be detected on the obverse, while the reverse maintains a typical royal-gold appearance. Examples of the inaugural Indian quarter-eagle can often be...
919The Collectors' Auction 2008 on 10/17/2008$875.00
1908 NGC MS-63.
A very clean appearance is enhanced by excellent obverse sharpness, though the reverse die appears to be a bit worn. There are no particular hits or abrasions that seem to limit the grade.
920The Collectors' Auction 2008 on 10/17/2008$975.00
1908 NGC MS-63.
Surprisingly free of blemishes, the obverse appears quite strong for the grade, though incidental hairlines are seen across much of the reverse.
921The Collectors' Auction 2008 on 10/17/2008$1,450.00
1908 NGC MS-64.
On its own, the obverse could inspire some consideration for an MS-65 grade, as it is unusually free of the marks and abrasions that plague this series. The reverse is generally clean as well, but...
854The Midwest Winter Sale 2008 on 02/08/2008$600.00
1908 (x2) and 1913 Indian quarter-eagles
Both of the 1908 coins grade AU-55, but their companion 1913 grades MS-62. Three coin lot.
855The Midwest Winter Sale 2008 on 02/08/2008$1,150.00
1908 Indian quarter-eagle, PCGS MS-63
Pleasing lemon- and russet-gold tones compete for predominance on the obverse, while the reverse is won over by the warmer russet coloration. An attractive coin that pairs a nicely struck obverse...
968The Collectors' Auction 2007 on 10/19/2007$2,100.00
Set of Indian Head Quarter Eagles.
This set was assembled with diligence by this consignor. Although the majority of these pieces fall within the major category of About Uncirculated, they are quite appealing. The set lacks only the...
957The Midwest Summer Sale 2007 on 07/27/2007$305.00
1908 AU-50+ Cleaned and 1925-D MS-60 Lightly Scratched.
This pairing consists of a first year of issue specimen and an example from the final year from the Denver mint. The 1908, despite its cleaning, has a light yellow-gold hue. The 1925-D, although its...
958The Midwest Summer Sale 2007 on 07/27/2007$200.00
1908 NGC AU-58.
This glistening gold example was struck in the inaugural year for this celebrated series. Just a touch of wear on the highest design elements, and an array of delicate hairlines, keep it from the...

1908 NGC MS-62.
A piece from the beginning year for this design type. Its mattelike surfaces have an orange-gold aspect that are highlighted with an iridescent rose and blue blend. Meager marks are observed with a...
311The Collector's Auction on 10/20/2006$205.00

312The Collector's Auction on 10/20/2006$425.00
1908 NGC MS-62.
This example from the initial production year for this series exhibits mattelike surfaces embellished with hues of red-orange and purple. Minor marks are viewed with a glass.

1908 NGC MS-62.
MS62 $2.50 Indians are very popular right now. With gold on the rise, these little beauties are sure to sky rocket even higher than they are now. This piece has attractive toning and only minimal...

1908 NGC MS-65.
This glistening, velvetlike Gem displays a delicate luster complemented by its rich yellow-gold aspect. It was remarkably struck and displays an appeal so seldom seen in this series. The lack of...
1017The Midwest Winter Sale on 02/17/2006$550.00
1908 PCGS MS-62.
An example from the first year off production for this series. Enhanced by yellow-gold mat-like surfaces, this remarkably struck piece - save for a slight softness of detail on the Eagle's upper...
1018The Midwest Winter Sale on 02/17/2006$1,250.00

1019The Midwest Winter Sale on 02/17/2006$2,600.00
1908 NGC MS-64.
Superb eye appeal is observed by this issue's matte like, reddish gold aspect. Except for a few contact ticks, its surfaces would be labeled pristine. Its splendid strike displays even the most...
