1916-D PCGS F-12. 1916-D PCGS F-12.
Lot Title: 1916-D PCGS F-12.
Description: 1916-D is the famous key to the Mercury dime series, and has seen a large upswing in value over the past decade. Although it has always been a prime target for counterfeiters, certification has alleviated that problem, but has also revealed that the date is actually readily available in low grades of AG through VG. At the F-12 level, which is the grade given this coin, the story changes. The vast majority either entered circulation and stayed there, resulting in heavy wear, or were quickly pulled out of circulation while still new by collectors who wanted an example of this new and intriguing design which had just replaced Barber's drab work. Thus, they are seldom seen in that select collector range of fine through extremely-fine.

Here is a stellar dime that displays beautiful pewter-grey patina and the ideal amount of darker patina worked perfectly into the recesses, which in turn aids perceived definition and yields a nice, sharp appearance. Indeed, at first glance, the grade seems slightly conservative, since there is substantial distinction between the vertical parallel lines in the fasces, and Liberty's wings display a few individual feathers. Best of all, there are no blemishes to hinder eye-appeal. No matter how one decides to collect Mercury dimes, there is really only a single key to the regular series, and it can be prudent to buy that coin first, since it will be the cornerstone that determines matched grades for everything else.

1916-D PCGS AG-3.
The perfect definition of AG-3 arises with this key-date dime, as both sides feature boldly outlined central motifs, but the reverse rim shows merging virtually the entire way around. Strictly...

611The Collectors' Auction 2013 on 10/18/2013$480.00
1916-D About Good.
Problem-free and perfectly original, with dove-grey patina and only honest wear. The reverse shows merging of the rim into the peripheral lettering, which calls to mind the AG-3 grade level.
612The Collectors' Auction 2013 on 10/18/2013$380.00
1916-D NGC AG-3.
Exquisite color for circulated silver could not be improved upon, and both sides display lovely circulation-smoothed quality. Rims merge almost entirely with peripheral details, but just to limited...
737The Midwest Summer Sale on 07/26/2013$475.00
1916-D, 1921, and 1921-D, all About Good.
Plucked directly out of the consignor's album, 1916-D shows some lettering into the rim on both sides and fragile ivory-grey toning. A touch more detail shows on the obverse for 1921, and 1921-D has...
738The Midwest Summer Sale on 07/26/2013$1,500.00
1916-D NGC F details/improperly cleaned/scratched.
A scratch below, and a small scrape above "Y" spells trouble for the grade, and NGC declared the coin "scratched" as a result. Trivial other marks wouldn't affect the grade, but NGC also noticed a...
501The Collectors' Auction 2012 on 10/05/2012$550.00
1916-D, 1921, and 1921-D, all About Good.
The three keys to a regular series of Mercury dimes comprise this trio. 1916-D is a touch better than AG-3, as the reverse rim is only partially merged into peripheral lettering. Both 1921 and...
502The Collectors' Auction 2012 on 10/05/2012$450.00
1916-D PCGS AG-3.
Strictly original and affected only by honest wear, the date and mintmark are bold. The obverse rim merges with a couple of letters in LIBERTY, while the reverse rim merges slightly with all the...
503The Collectors' Auction 2012 on 10/05/2012$2,700.00
1916-D VF.
By far, most of the key Mercury dimes at this level have been certified, making this a particularly rare opportunity for the album collector to place a strong example into his album. This is a...
504The Collectors' Auction 2012 on 10/05/2012$4,800.00
1916-D NGC XF-45.
An amazingly smooth obverse shows no distraction whatsoever, save a virtually invisible tiny "X" in the wing. This is hardly something that could be called a "distraction", and the reverse is just as...
480The Midwest Summer Sale 2012 on 07/27/2012$700.00
1916-D PCGS GD-6.
The reverse left rim just misses the lettering by enough margin to qualify the dime as "full rims". Obverse appearance is strangely attractive, with lovely ice-blue toning draped in the upper and...
481The Midwest Summer Sale 2012 on 07/27/2012$725.00
1916-D PCGS GD-6.
Abiding by modern grading standards, one is almost forced to upgrade to G-6 to get a key date dime with full rims, and that is what the present coin offers. There is not the slightest hint of merged...
890The Collectors' Auction 2011 on 10/21/2011$1,150.00
1916-D PCGS VG-8.
In satisfactory manner, the rims are fully and boldly separated from the devices -- not necessarily a given in today's grading environment. There is a mere hint of definition just remaining on each...
595The Midwest Summer Sale 2011 on 07/29/2011$500.00
1916-D PCGS AG-3.
Thoroughly delightful dove-grey patina ensures the numismatic quality, in spite of heavy even wear. The entire reverse rim is inescapably attached to the tops of all lettering, but anyone would be...
596The Midwest Summer Sale 2011 on 07/29/2011$725.00
1916-D PCGS GD-4.
Dove-grey patina is absolutely, completely and utterly beyond reproach for this key Mercury dime, probably representing perfection for heavily circulated silver. One cannot ask for a cleaner, more...
597The Midwest Summer Sale 2011 on 07/29/2011$675.00
1916-D NGC GD-4.
Perceptibly sharper than another 1916-D graded G-4 in today's sale, the reverse displays two-thirds of the reverse rim, merging only at the tops of AMERICA and DIME. Slate-grey color is ideal for a...
598The Midwest Summer Sale 2011 on 07/29/2011$750.00
1916-D NGC GD-6.
Perfectly and unquestionably original, with a strong date and bold mintmark. The rim on the reverse is about 50% complete.
369The Collectors' Auction 2010 on 10/15/2010$400.00
1916-D About Good.
Absolutely problem-free and graded from the standpoint of strict wear, this is either a top-end Fair-2, or a weaker AG-3, since the obverse rim touches the tops of LIBERTY, and the reverse rim is...
454The Midwest Summer Sale 2010 on 07/23/2010$450.00
1916-D PCGS AG-3.
Perfectly original and graded strictly for wear, neither side displays much of a rim, but the obverse rim is only slightly weak, while the reverse is nicely consistent all the way around, with every...
455The Midwest Summer Sale 2010 on 07/23/2010$675.00
1916-D PCGS GD-4.
Pale grey overall, with an obverse that is a trifle lighter in complexion than the reverse. Although the date and mintmark are both exceptionally bold, the merged reverse rim calls into question the...
456The Midwest Summer Sale 2010 on 07/23/2010$975.00
1916-D Good/lightly cleaned obverse.
Hairlines are very minor across the obverse, and might in fact be completely forgivable at the AG-3 level. Indeed, we all know there are much worse coins that have been certified as "problem-free". ...
347The Midwest Winter Sale on 02/12/2010$575.00
1916-D PCGS Genuine.
Could it be that PCGS is getting a little carried away with the Genuine-92 code? The so-called "cleaning" of this key dime is trivial to the utmost extent. Horizontal hairlines curve downward across...
348The Midwest Winter Sale on 02/12/2010$6,250.00
1916-D PCGS Genuine.
Whereas your cataloger sometimes complains that PCGS indicates "altered surfaces" when a designation for "cleaning" might be sufficient, this seems to be a case of the opposite situation. The...
349The Midwest Winter Sale on 02/12/2010$600.00
1916-D PCGS About Good.
The obverse grades fully Good, while the reverse grades About Good 3.5. In all seriousness, this 1916-D dime is about as close to Good as a coin can possibly get and still just-miss the grade. At...
350The Midwest Winter Sale on 02/12/2010$725.00
1916-D PCGS GD-4.
A very mild cleaning has left trivial horizontal hairlines across Liberty's portrait, yet the original dove-grey patina remains virtually intact. Key date coins always get preferential treatment...
285The Collectors' Auction 2009 on 10/16/2009$650.00
1916-D ANACS Genuine certificate. About Good.
Making a very rare appearance at auction is an ANACS certificate for authenticity only, accompanying a 1916-D Mercury dime and registered on 9/6/1980. No grade opinion was offered, but AG-3/obverse...
286The Collectors' Auction 2009 on 10/16/2009$800.00
1916-D PCGS GD-6.
Deeply original, the "choice good" grade is confirmed by the fully delineated rims on both sides, as well as a touch of feather detail at the far right side of Liberty's cap. While not marred by any...
610The Midwest Summer Sale on 07/24/2009$300.00
1916-D ANACS Fair-2 details, cleaned.
Details are probably a touch better than the F-2 details grade assigned by ANACS, but the obverse is too white to pass as original. The reverse is curiously cinnamon-brown in color.
611The Midwest Summer Sale on 07/24/2009$425.00
1916-D About Good.
Thick, dark toning tends to the abate the effect of a couple of minor obverse scratches and some random digs on the right side of the reverse. Nearly a quarter of the reverse lettering remains free...
612The Midwest Summer Sale on 07/24/2009$350.00
1916-D ANACS AG-3 details, cleaned-damaged..
Since the "damage" denoted on the ANACS slab is comprised entirely of reverse scratches, one wonders why they weren't simply mentioned as such. The obverse is very pale, but the reverse is curiously...
613The Midwest Summer Sale on 07/24/2009$1,250.00
1916-D PCGS VG-8.
Well worn in all central areas, but the rims are sharp and 100% fully delineated. A strictly original coin.
614The Midwest Summer Sale on 07/24/2009$1,910.00
1916-D PCGS F-12.
The premier rarity in the Mercury dime series -- 1916-D, in case you didn't know -- is notoriously difficult to find above well worn grades of AG - VG. Sometimes, it seems like they were originally...
615The Midwest Summer Sale on 07/24/2009$1,765.00
1916-D F.
Assuming it ends up selling at a bargain price, there could be no better album candidate than this 1916-D dime, as it displays terrific detail on both sides, including substantial separation of the...
616The Midwest Summer Sale on 07/24/2009$33,500.00
1916-D PCGS MS-65FB.
Many coin collectors, and in particular aficionados of the Mercury dime series, do not realize that coins struck in 1916 and early 1917 used a higher relief obverse die than all coins struck later, as...
619The Midwest Winter Sale 2009 on 02/13/2009$1,400.00
1916-D VG Details/bent.
Superb, original surface quality ensures the appeal of this key Mercury dime, so difficult to locate uncertified in this grade range! Astute observers will note that the coin has been very, very...
620The Midwest Winter Sale 2009 on 02/13/2009$750.00
1916-D NGC AG-3.
Perfectly graded, with full obverse rims and two-thirds of the reverse rim merged. Expected evidence of circulation takes the form of trivial old hairline scratches and a smallish scribble beneath...
621The Midwest Winter Sale 2009 on 02/13/2009$775.00
1916-D ANACS VG-8 Details, damaged.
Damage alluded to on the ANACS label is limited to some sort of lower-left obverse edge problem that is conveniently nearly obscured by the slab insert. Not noted is the fact that this coin has been...
622The Midwest Winter Sale 2009 on 02/13/2009$1,350.00
1916-D NGC VG-10.
Fantastic for the grade and supremely original. Merely incidental toned-over hairlines and a brief circulation scratch over IN GOD are scarcely noticeable, but the quality certainly can't be missed!
417The Collectors' Auction 2008 on 10/17/2008$2,100.00
1916-D PCGS Genuine.
Certified as "genuine" by PCGS, this 1916-D dime possesses detail much better than that of typically worn survivors, which tend to be worn down to "about good" or "good" levels. Glossy surface texture...
418The Collectors' Auction 2008 on 10/17/2008$575.00
1916-D About Good.
100% original and just marvelously smooth and appealing, all from strictly honest wear. Splashes of tobacco-gold color accent the reverse.
419The Collectors' Auction 2008 on 10/17/2008$550.00
1916-D About Good.
An original coin with perfect grey color and no problems - just normal circulation. Merging of the reverse rim confers the grade of AG-3.
420The Collectors' Auction 2008 on 10/17/2008$550.00
1916-D NGC AG-3.
1916-D Mercury dimes, even in low circulated grades, have performed well in the coin market over recent years. This example is obviously very original, with merging of the rims mandating an AG-3...
421The Collectors' Auction 2008 on 10/17/2008$510.00
1916-D NGC AG-3.
Unquestionably original, this well circulated key-date 1916-D Mercury dime features good obverse rims, but unmistakable merging of the reverse rim, leads to the grade of AG-3. A few very old scratches...
422The Collectors' Auction 2008 on 10/17/2008$700.00
1916-D About Good.
If a grade of AG-3.5 ever gained widespread acceptance, it would have to be applied to this key date Mercury dime. This is a perfect coin (for the grade) in every respect, with purely original...
423The Collectors' Auction 2008 on 10/17/2008$1,000.00
1916-D Good.
Pewter fields are bordered with accents of cinder-grey that embolden the details somewhat. This coin is on the verge of a fully "very good" grade, as the obverse rim stands entirely clear of the...
424The Collectors' Auction 2008 on 10/17/2008$1,750.00
1916-D ANACS XF-40 Details, Cleaned.
Though it pains your cataloger to dispute a "details" grade assigned by ANACS, an honest assessment of this premier key requires suggestion that the details may be closer to VF-30. There is no...
528The Midwest Winter Sale 2008 on 02/08/2008$6,750.00
1916-D Mercury dime, PCGS XF-45
Coin boards were introduced during the 1930s, and the inclusion of spaces for mint marked coins led to the discovery by many collectors of the pleasure of seeking coins by date and mint - a novel idea...

1916-D Mercury dime, NGC AU-50
Subdued luster is most evident near the edges of each side, especially between peripheral details. Heather-grey with a twist of lemon-gold color hidden in some protected areas.

439The Collectors' Auction 2007 on 10/19/2007$950.00
1916-D ANACS Fine Details, Net VG-8, Cleaned.
Though obviously cleaned, subsequent storage, almost certainly in a Whitman (or similar) album, has restored a minority of the original patina. Three or four old scratches on the portrait occurred...

1916-D AG-3 and 1921-D Fine-15.
