(About The Images)
1781 North American Token. PCGS XF-40. 1781 North American Token. PCGS XF-40.
Lot Title: 1781 North American Token. PCGS XF-40.
Description: The North American Token, which shows a date of 1781, is virtually unknown in uncirculated grades, causing AU and even XF example to form the high-end of condition for the type. Here is a gratifying examples graded XF-40 by PCGS, and it displays considerable eye-appeal due to walnut-brown obverse patina that exchanges prevalence with tinges of mahogany-tan patina on the reverse. While it has been known since 1978 (due to the efforts of David Winter) that the North American Token is not truly of Colonial origin (it was actually struck in the late 1810s), tradition has carried it forward through today for inclusion in the Colonial series.
