Lot Title:
1818/5 B-1. NGC MS-63.
Description:
Only one obverse die produced the familiar 1818/5 overdate bust quarter, and it features evidence of speckled die rust in front of Liberty's portrait. This platinum-grey quarter provides distinct evidence of the underdigit despite multiple die-clashes that suggest a middle die state, and further evidence of deterioration of the dies is indicated by the lack of finer definition in the hair curls and on the eagle's neck. Still, all the stars and dentils are sharp, and both sides seem to be perfectly centered. Remarkable for a silver coin from late in this decade, some parallel striations projecting diagonally northeast from the clasp are highly reminiscent of adjustment marks, never seen on coins of this decade (or after). One must assume that they are merely residual scrapes that existed on the planchet strip prior to being punched out. Percolating about both sides is a plentiful supply of very attractive, though slightly subdued mint luster, and only the very faintest hint of iridescent cyan color may be discerned about the obverse periphery. A highly desirable type coin that seems under valued even in today's receding market.
