Lot Title:

1804 Restrike (of 1860). NGC MS-63 BN.
Description:
Restrikes of the key 1804 large-cent address a void in the market on two pragmatic levels, one being the rarity of the original 1804 strike (mintage of 96,500) and the other being the whimsical fancy of numismatic curiosity, especially since it is not truly a "restrike" -- not even close! The obverse die was actually an 1803 that had its date re-engraved, and the reverse die isn't even of the correct type, being from an 1820 die-marriage. To top it all off, these coins were minted privately, though there is no positively known reason for their existence or purpose. One can only suspect less-than-honest motives.
Aesthetically, no 1804 restrike can really be called "choice" or "beautiful", since both dies used to strike the fantasy piece were heavily rusted and the obverse cracked, but from the standpoint of preservation, the term certainly befits this example. Both sides are ideally glossy chocolate-brown and feature even fewer contact marks than expected, though of course these tokens never really "circulated", and one might expect reasonable preservation. A dash of carbon in front of Liberty's portrait distinguishes this coin, with additional morsels gathered into the obverse periphery.

1804 Restrike (of 1860), or is it an altered electrotype?
There has to be a fascinating story behind this, as if the circumstances surrounding the 1804 so-called restrike weren't clandestine enough. Restrikes should display the long, arcing die crack across... |
