Lot Title:
1829 (N-2, R.2)NGC XF-45 BN.
Description:
It would be easy to dismiss at first glance this 1829 as a somewhat choppy, if nicely detailed, N-2, but further examination leads to the startling discovery of significant luster remaining beneath the nut-brown patina, especially on the reverse. In fact, the NGC XF-45 grade actually understates sharpness by as much as ten points since this issue was generally flatly struck. Further investigation of die state characteristics finds a die crack through the first few stars, but none on the right side, as is seen for later struck coins. In addition, dentilation is razor sharp around both sides, marking this an early die state.
