(About The Images)
1855 PCGS Genuine. 1855 PCGS Genuine.
Lot Title: 1855 PCGS Genuine.
Description: Distinct luster remains prevalent around the margins, particularly in protected areas of the obverse and the edges of the wreath device. Lightly worn, a details grade of at least XF seems reasonable for this second year issue. The PCGS Genuine-95 code indicates presence of scratches, and denial of a straight grade is understandable, since there is a handful of short, curly scratches on the obverse and a few more on the reverse, though it should be noted that none is individually distracting. Indeed, subtract just a single offender from each side, and this is likely a suitable coin for grading. An original piece that is definitely not offensive when viewed at arm's length, and likely becomes a commendable representative in an affordable type set.

440The Collectors' Auction 2011 on 10/21/2011$1,500.00
1855 PCGS AU-53.
Canary-gold color is strongly saturated throughout and energized by traces of sparkling surface texture near the edge of all the design elements. Most of the surface marks are typically placed,...
1067The Midwest Summer Sale 2011 on 07/29/2011$650.00
1855 XF details/cleaned/rim cut.
Only lightly cleaned, with traces of luster still barely visible around the peripheral legends. A rim cut on the obverse rim at 8:00 is of perhaps minor concern, but cannot be ignored. Strong die...
1068The Midwest Summer Sale 2011 on 07/29/2011$1,150.00
1855 XF details/cleaned.
Quite a bit of luster remains in the fields despite the details grade of only XF, and for that matter, the cleaning is not really all that disagreeable. A lucky collector might very well be delighted...
1069The Midwest Summer Sale 2011 on 07/29/2011$850.00
1855 PCGS XF-45.
1855 is a common date in the series and frequently fulfills type coin purposes. This is an unusually original example that benefits from perfectly even wear and handsome, mustard-gold surfaces...
1012The Midwest Summer Sale 2010 on 07/23/2010$1,950.00
1855 NGC AU-58.
Few issues in the three-dollar gold series are affordable in better grades, yet there is considerable pressure by type collectors for problem-free examples of the unusual denomination. Thus, even the...
763The Collectors' Auction 2009 on 10/16/2009$800.00
1855 PCGS Genuine.
1855 is a popular choice for type in the three-dollar gold series, as examples are always available in nearly any grade. While this one provides more pleasing vintage quality than expected, the "code...
895The Midwest Winter Sale 2009 on 02/13/2009$1,150.00
1855 NGC AU-55.
Scant patina can be seen in the fields, which themselves are perhaps moderately abraded. Plenty of parallel die polish lines can be seen in the protected areas of the reverse.
971The Collectors' Auction 2008 on 10/17/2008$1,180.00
1855 NGC AU-53.
About two-tenths of the original mint luster has gathered to the peripheral areas, contrasting with field friction that derives from circulation wear. Straw gold and mostly untoned.
890The Midwest Winter Sale 2008 on 02/08/2008$3,600.00
1855 Three dollar, NGC MS-62
A straw-gold coin with a bit of a prooflike aspect visible particularly on the obverse. Certainly better detailed than many other examples in the series, though the luster is compromised slightly by...
992The Collectors' Auction 2007 on 10/19/2007$1,100.00
1855 PCGS XF-45.
Straw gold surfaces still retain a little dirt embedded within some of the peripheral lettering, confirming a reasonable degree of original quality. Just enough luster rotates around the edges to...
993The Collectors' Auction 2007 on 10/19/2007$750.00
1855 XF-45 Details, Cleaned.
The cleaning appears merely as a rash of faint hairlines in a single diagonal direction across the obverse (upper left to lower right). Plenty of mint frost can easily be found between the letters,...
1020The Midwest Summer Sale 2007 on 07/27/2007$600.00
1855 VF-20 Cleaned.
In spite of an improper cleaning, even this three-dollar gold coin must be considered desirable and highly sought as a type coin. An array of hairlines encircle the yellow-gold design motifs, yet...
1021The Midwest Summer Sale 2007 on 07/27/2007$2,000.00
1855 NGC AU-58.
This specimen's ebullient orange-gold patination suppresses from the unaided eye the faint hairlines and minute ticks present. Admirably struck with well-defined details.
1022The Midwest Summer Sale 2007 on 07/27/2007$2,900.00
1855 NGC MS-61.
This issue's frosty surfaces project a sparkling yellow-gold visual vibrancy. It exhibits a light sprinkling of minute contact ticks, especially seen beneath Liberty's lowest hair curls. It is a...
1023The Midwest Summer Sale 2007 on 07/27/2007$4,500.00
1855 NGC MS-62.
Bright, lustrous, and, for collectors of the series, all too uncommon in such a high grade. For many collectors, MS-62 might be the ideal grade because the listed price value, in many publications,...
337The Collector's Auction on 10/20/2006$925.00
1855 XF-40 Cleaned.
A pale yellow-gold aspect is transmitted from this popular denomination's slightly cleaned surfaces. Lightly circulated, this piece reveals a sprinkling of microscopic ticks and faint hairlines on...
338The Collector's Auction on 10/20/2006$850.00
1855 XF-45 Cleaned Obverse.
An appealing yellow-gold aspect prevails even though its obverse was improperly cleaned. There are no obtrusive marks or blemishes to note on this rather decently struck circulated example.
339The Collector's Auction on 10/20/2006$1,800.00
1855 PCGS AU-53.
A red-orange glow emits from the somewhat reflective surfaces of this second year issue. This example displays a light sprinkling of ticks as well as a few minor scrapes that flank Liberty's profile....
429The Midwest Summer Sale 2006 on 07/21/2006$5,750.00
1855 NGC MS-62.
A sparking issue enhanced with frosty surfaces. Its vibrant honey-gold aspect cloaks the random array of ticks and hairlines. The strike displays well-defined details.
