(About The Images)
1905 Lewis & Clark. NGC MS-66 PL. 1905 Lewis & Clark. NGC MS-66 PL.
Lot Title: 1905 Lewis & Clark. NGC MS-66 PL.
Description: At best, perhaps a handful of Lewis and Clark gold dollars exist in numerically finer grade than this MS-66 PL example, but this is the finest certified with the "prooflike" designation. The Scotsman Auction Company is fortunate to be consigned such a rare jewel, as prudent appreciation of the marvelous quality attests to the lofty grade conferred by NGC. No less a numismatic luminary than Q. David Bowers once noted that the Lewis and Clark commemorative dollars of either date are "singularly distinctive for their rarity in higher grades". Both the 1904 and 1905 dates are elusive, the latter date recognized as the scarcer of the two."

While not providing much in the way of device-to-field contrast, the liquid-metal surface quality projects considerable reflectivity, and light beckons merrily off the fields as the coin is tilted back and forth. As should be the case for a prooflike coin, subtle cartwheel effect is noticeable only in limited quantity, and then only in the fields, since the devices exhibit significant frost. Comparison to competing examples shows that this coin enjoys a superlative strike, with seemingly no detail at all missing from either side. Even Lewis' and Clark's pupils are sharply defined! A tiny strikethrough at 10:00 of the obverse can serve as a pedigree marker, and provides incidental evidence of special polishing of the die prior to striking of this piece. A marvelous coin in a marvelous holder, and certainly deserving of a place in the finest coin cabinet.

1905 Lewis & Clark. PCGS MS-64 (rattler).
Sometimes, light hairlines bear responsibility for limiting a coin to the PF-64 level, but not many are really obvious in this case. Perhaps the few that do exist combined with slightly weak luster...

1905 Lewis & Clark. PCGS MS-63.
Thrilling luster flashes through the fields, its potency slightly subdued by banana-gold patina. Several wispy hairlines are evident with a loupe, as are a few strikethroughs, but the most important...

1905 Lewis & Clark. PCGS MS-61.
Numerous hairlines align more or less in a horizontal direction across each side, and could very well be slidemarks from careless album storage. If not for their mischievous effect on grade, this...

1905 Lewis & Clark. PCGS MS-65.

1905 Lewis & Clark. PCGS MS-63.
