Thirty-one certified Walking Liberty half-dollars. PCGS MS-64. Thirty-one certified Walking Liberty half-dollars. PCGS MS-64.
Lot Title: Thirty-one certified Walking Liberty half-dollars. PCGS MS-64.
Description: Although the consignor has not explicitly stated so, one may perceive that this lot represents persistent effort on his part to complete a "short set" of Walking Liberty half-dollars with some difficult restrictions. His goal was clearly to include only strictly original and premium quality coins in PCGS green-label holders (large format slabs and rattlers), and only in the ideal collector grade of MS-64. In this case, he pursued the "extended short set" beginning with 1934, though he likely found it almost impossible to locate earlier coins. Perusal of his achievement, incomplete as it may be, confirms a terrific eye for quality, though of course, the earlier slabs have a reputation (deserved or not) for representing a period of conservative grading. Practically every coin in this lot is premium for the grade, with strike deficiencies noted below where applicable.

Coins included are listed as follows, with all being green-label holders except where noted as being in "rattler" capsules: 1934, 1935, 1936, 1936-D, 1937, 1938, 1939 (rattler), 1939-D (rattler), 1939-S, 1940, 1940-S (rattler, weak central details), 1941, 1941-D, 1941-S, 1942, 1942-D (reverse is toned), 1942-S (rattler), 1943, 1943-D, 1943-S (decent central detail), 1944, 1944-D (rattler), 1944-S (weak central detail), 1945, 1945-D, 1945-S (slightly weak central details), 1946 (rattler), 1946-D (hints of intriguing pastel-rainbow iridescence), 1946-S (weak central details), 1947 (rattler), and 1947-D. 1941-S is noticeably above average in that the strike is decent for an issue plagued by poor production. While Liberty's central hand displays little detail, it is almost completely outlined. While the traditional short set is complete, nine coins are missing from the extended set, including: 1934-D, 1934-S, 1935-D, 1935-S, 1936-S, 1937-D, 1937-D, 1938-D, and 1938-S. Obviously, it would be a great and intriguing challenge to locate those remaining coins in green-label MS-64 holders. Cataloger's note: the rattler slab for the 1942-S is cracked such that its structural integrity is compromised. Thirty-one coin lot from the Will Shorter Consignment.
