Lot Title:
1787 Connecticut Copper. Mailed Bust Left, Laughing Head obverse. Miller 6.1-M, Rarity-1. PCGS AU-53.
Description:
Finely detailed and decidedly original, this is a meritorious example of the common and popular Redbook "laughing head" Connecticut, so-called because of the jocular appearance of the effigy on the obverse. His mouth agape in merry amusement, one only wishes to know what joke it was that caused him to react with such gaiety. Pleasing, deep walnut and mahogany tones compete for surface area across each side, the darker walnut tones usually yielding to the prevalent lighter shade on the obverse, but occupying the left two-thirds of the reverse. Overall, the planchet is pleasantly dark and troubled only modestly by a few of the very shallow planchet voids always expected of an early Colonial type.
