(About The Images)
1831 (JR-3) PCGS Genuine. 1831 (JR-3) PCGS Genuine.
Lot Title: 1831 (JR-3) PCGS Genuine.
Description: JR-3 is not indicated on the slab, and is one of the common die-marriages for 1831. The PCGS Genuine-92 code does indicate "cleaning", but apparently, that esteemed company elected not to include an additional code for "mustache stubble", even though that is precisely what can be seen lying next to the first star. Why must so many slabs have hairs inside of them? Is it part of a cunning scheme to include DNA sampling with all slabs in order to deter Chinese counterfeiting? or do the fellas really need to start shaving at home, rather than in the grading room?

Turning attention to the coin itself, it is immediately noticeable that the surfaces have been cleaned in the past, retaining now a glossy and not-quite-natural appearance, yet the coin has not been horribly scrubbed as some have been. In addition, modestly attractive rim toning has begun to develop on both sides, and this goes a long way to overcoming any offensive appearance.

Low Estimate: $360.00
High Estimate: $400.00

719The Midwest Summer Sale on 07/26/2013$750.00
1831 NGC Unc details/stained.
References cite a very low condition census for 1831 JR-6, which makes this a particularly interesting example. NGC offers a "stained" disclaimer along with an "UNC DETAILS" grade, but we believe...
438The Midwest Summer Sale 2012 on 07/27/2012$1,300.00
1831 (JR-5, R.1) PCGS MS-61 (rattler).
The reverse is far the more attractive side from a technical standpoint, grading MS-63 quite easily all by itself. A peculiar silvery disturbance in the obverse lower right field is all the more...
590The Midwest Summer Sale on 07/24/2009$360.00
1831 JR-3 AU/lightly cleaned.
The predominantly pale aspect is derived from a fairly light cleaning that caused little damage to the flowline luster. This coin still retains some original luster, and subsequent natural retoning...
415The Collectors' Auction 2007 on 10/19/2007$900.00
1831 JR-1 AU-50, 1834 JR-4 AU-50, and 1835 JR-9 AU-50.
All three of the Capped Bust dimes included in this lot are extremely original, high quality examples, and none of them have any problems whatsoever. The trio commences with an 1831 JR-1 that grades...
