(About The Images)
1917-D NGC MS-62. 1917-D NGC MS-62.
Lot Title: 1917-D NGC MS-62.
Description: On several levels, this is an interesting 1917-D Buffalo nickel, and to begin with, the NGC grade of MS-62 seems a little conservative. Strike quality is marvelous, with full horn and tail visible on the reverse, while the Indian's braid is sculpted in lovely high relief. Die fatigue and impending failure are evident from a rim cud at 3:00 on the obverse, from which a short die crack meanders casually into the field. Finally, the color is somewhat dark and displays intriguing gunmetal-blue and violet-orange iridescence that may be partially the result of improper alloy. This theory stems from the presence of numerous tiny planchet defects beneath the lowest feather and at the Indian's forehead.
