(About The Images)
1886-S/S VAM-2 (Top-100) PCGS MS-64. 1886-S/S VAM-2 (Top-100) PCGS MS-64.
Lot Title: 1886-S/S VAM-2 (Top-100) PCGS MS-64.
Description: Seldom is 1886-S uttered in the same breath as more famous issues in the Morgan dollar series for identification as a key, yet it becomes quite an expensive item at the gem level, making MS-64 coins like the present one suitable for high-grade collectors. Here is a coin with flowing luster and plentiful brilliance, with the most obvious grade limiting factors consisting of quite a number of small, erratic pin scratches on Liberty's cheek and upper neck. Indeed, conservative graders might deem this coin a little deficient overall for the assigned PCGS grade just because of those marks. Undoubtedly more important to VAM collectors is the "S/S" that characterizes VAM-2, a Top-100 issue, though your fearless cataloger would also like to note that the final digit "6" in the date has very much the appearance of an underdigit -- perhaps another "6" that was previously punched too high? An intriguing coin that warrants further inspection by specialists.

882The Collectors' Auction - 2014 on 10/17/2014$9,500.00
Twenty 1886-S Morgan dollars, all UNC.
Beach and Land Collection. Collector appeal: "B+". Edge patina varies considerably, leading to the conclusion that this is a put-together roll. But seriously, how often does a full roll of 1886-S...
883The Collectors' Auction - 2014 on 10/17/2014$370.00
1886-S and 1890-S, both PCGS MS-62.
Checkered Collection. Just as one might hope from consistent PCGS grading standards, these look like virtual twins aside from the dates, with each showing modest luster grazes in the obverse fields,...
884The Collectors' Auction - 2014 on 10/17/2014$600.00
1886-S PCGS MS-64.
Bradford Pear Collection. Value quadruples to a still-manageable level for 1886-S at the next grade, but when MS-64 looks this nice, why expend the extra resources for a very slight bump in quality?...
821The Midwest Summer Sale 2014 on 07/18/2014$475.00
1886-S (VAM-1A) NGC MS-63.
Noticeably less common in higher grades, 1886-S remains affordable at the present MS-63. Absolutely deafening luster surrounds high-resolution devices, with the entire package dressed up in mild...
999The Midwest Summer Sale on 07/26/2013$2,900.00
1886-S (VAM-2) PCGS MS-65 CAC.
1886-S proves to be even more elusive than its premium value in MS-65 would indicate, with most examples relegated to a lower grade for excessive abrasions often seen. Not so this pleasing example,...
766The Collectors' Auction 2012 on 10/05/2012$400.00
1886-S MS-61, and an 1887-S MS-62, both NGC.
A pair of dollars includes coins that grade in the lower mint-state grades, but both are nice for respective assessments and would cost quite a bit more at even MS-63. the 1886-S (MS-61) shows...
767The Collectors' Auction 2012 on 10/05/2012$360.00
1886-S PCGS MS-63.
1886-S often shows abraded surfaces, yet this "choice" example manages to avoid major marks, aside from several small abrasions clustered on the upper cheek. Off-white with excellent luster and an...
768The Collectors' Auction 2012 on 10/05/2012$1,850.00
1886-S/S (VAM-2, Top 100) NGC MS-65.
Spectacular, pure silver-white surfaces show no toning whatsoever on either side, allowing the full GEM quality to shine through. Liberty's cheek remains clean as can be, and the fields are amazingly...
707The Midwest Summer Sale 2012 on 07/27/2012$775.00
1886-S (VAM-2 S/S) PCGS MS-62, and an 1887-S PCGS MS-64.
A pair of better S-mint Morgan dollars, both certified by PCGS. 1886-S/S VAM-2 is a Top-100 attraction, this white example graded MS-62 and quite decent at that level. Liberty's cheek is somewhat...
889The Midwest Summer Sale 2011 on 07/29/2011$2,300.00
1886-S PCGS MS-65 (green label).
At the MS-65 grade level, 1886-S becomes a significant semi-key in a complete collection, a stance supported by population statistics. PCGS has put 249 into the MS-65 grade, but only 32 higher, and...
790The Midwest Summer Sale 2010 on 07/23/2010$800.00
1886-S and 1901-S PCGS MS-63.
While not terribly scarce in circulated grades, 1886-S and especially 1901-S offer a challenge in better uncirculated grades, and both of these meet standards for a PCGS MS-63 grade. Appearance of...
791The Midwest Summer Sale 2010 on 07/23/2010$600.00
1886-S PCGS MS-64 (ogh).
The MS-64 grade assigned by this PCGS green-label holder seems risky and undoubtedly assures this coin will never be cracked out. The obverse is suitably close to gem quality, which is what one hopes...
970The Midwest Summer Sale on 07/24/2009$525.00
1886-S NGC MS-64.
Better than average for MS-64, as Liberty's cheek is affected mostly by mere luster grazes, and few contact marks of any significance. A marvelous satiny-white coin that has taken on the merest...

1886-S MS-63, 1887-S MS-63, and 1900-S MS-63.
A captivating lot of three gleaming, mint-fresh Morgan dollars, all of which certainly grade MS-63 at the very minimum. The 1886-S is gorgeous, with a fascinating array of die-polish lines (as...

1886-S PCGS MS-65.
The 1886-S Morgan dollar is one of those coins that is characterized by an enormous and well-deserved leap in value between MS-64 and MS-65. Fortunately, the present example leaves no doubt as to its...

1886-S MS-63.
Only when seen in person and carefully examined can the prooflike characteristics of this Morgan be fully appreciated. Speckled tones of turquoise and violet ornament the peripheries of both the...

1886-S NGC MS-64 PL.
Liberty's face, and the Eagle on the reverse, are almost entirely free from marks -- and both have a pleasing frosty appearance. The devices, while not reflective enough to be considered deep, are...

1886-S MS-60 and 1887-S MS-63.
Here are a nice pair of better date dollars that are Uncirculated. The 1886-S grades MS-60+ and the 1887-S grades MS-63.

849The Midwest Summer Sale 2006 on 07/21/2006$200.00
1886-S MS-63 Environment Damage.
Nice luster and tons of flash, but around the peripheries of the reverse is a very dark purplish area that appears to be environmental damage.
