(About The Images)
1878 PCGS XF-45. 1878 PCGS XF-45.
Lot Title: 1878 PCGS XF-45.
Description: In any commercial grade, 1878 is easily the most common three-dollar gold issue, and has served widely for type gold purposes. At mildly circulated levels, it is an eminently affordable coin, considering the scarcity of any example from the series, and this XF-45 example, housed in a PCGS green-label holder, provides considerably more appeal than one might expect. Luster quality seems to nearly border on the about-uncirculated level, and there are no particularly noticeable marks on either side. Criticism could only stem from slightly glossy surfaces, but that is merely grasping at straws for a coin this nice.

1878 UNC details/hairlined.
No attempt has ever been made by the consignor to certify this piece, so it is tough to predict whether some fleeting, fragile hairlines that dart about the obverse will preclude a straight grade. We...
1124The Midwest Summer Sale on 07/26/2013$925.00
1878 PCGS Genuine (Unc details/cleaned)
Liberty Mast Estate. PCGS accurately draws attention to hairlines swiped diagonally up and right over the obverse, while the reverse has similar hairlines nearly vertically oriented throughout. ...
870The Midwest Summer Sale 2012 on 07/27/2012$1,603.00
1878 ANACS MS-61.
Decent luster billows up through the fields, but shows some effects from a couple of past wipes, as a few stray hairlines pull gently away from the flowline pattern. At arm's length, this is a really...
871The Midwest Summer Sale 2012 on 07/27/2012$5,750.00
1878 PCGS MS-64.
Absolutely delightful, bright and pristine medium-gold surfaces exhibit the kind of luster that should be seen on every nice three-dollar gold piece. Shimmering rolls of frost texture the wide-open...
466The Collectors' Auction 2011 on 10/21/2011$1,100.00
1878 NGC AU-55.
Surfaces are endowed with extensive olive-gold patina that briefly cedes to carrot tones in the protected areas. The vintage effect is very enticing by comparison to the endless number of coins that...
467The Collectors' Auction 2011 on 10/21/2011$1,051.00
1878 NGC AU-55.
Sharp and well detailed in spite of a little wear, the obverse displays essentially all of Liberty's hair tresses, with only a little loss of detail in the lowest curl. The surfaces exude calm, warm,...
468The Collectors' Auction 2011 on 10/21/2011$1,300.00
1878 NGC AU-58.
A lustrous butter-gold example of the type, the reverse retains a majority of the original luster while the obverse suffers more obvious wear and has incomplete flowlines in the fields. A number of...
469The Collectors' Auction 2011 on 10/21/2011$1,850.00
1878 PCGS MS-61.
A delicate touch of greenish iridescence flirts with the prevailing olive-gold tint. Definition is only about average, with incomplete details noticeable at the top of the hair, the cotton bolls, and...
1074The Midwest Summer Sale 2011 on 07/29/2011$1,050.00
1878 AU.
Excellent luster proclaims a little better-than-average AU grade, with commensurate details visible in Liberty's crown and tresses. Fields display the light rub and slight hairlines that result from...
833The Collectors' Auction 2010 on 10/15/2010$2,000.00
1878 PCGS MS-61.
Considerable velvety bloom arises from the fields, spreading out across each side in multi-dimensional texture quite unlike the usual cartwheel effect seen on other dates. 1878 is well known for this...
834The Collectors' Auction 2010 on 10/15/2010$4,000.00
1878 PCGS MS-63.
Tortoise-shell luster on the obverse is simply sensational, as if many rolls of satin fabric had been gathered up and layered in a delicate pinwheel pattern about the obverse. The aesthetic effect is...
1018The Midwest Summer Sale 2010 on 07/23/2010$1,400.00
1878 PCGS AU-58.
In times past, prior to advent of certification, this undoubtedly would have been sold as a BU coin, since neither side displays any real signs of wear, and only trivial friction in the fields...
1019The Midwest Summer Sale 2010 on 07/23/2010$7,000.00
1878 NGC MS-64.
In a series fraught with scarce issues, difficult dates and condition rarities, 1878 stands as easily the most available in any grade, making it the ultimate type representative. Satin smooth luster...
778The Midwest Winter Sale on 02/12/2010$1,250.00
1878 NGC AU-55.
A decidedly type-only example of the three-dollar series, since the AU-55 grade ensures affordability for this common issue. Copious luster gleams from the corn-gold surfaces, downplayed only gently...
767The Collectors' Auction 2009 on 10/16/2009$2,900.00
1878 PCGS MS-62.
MS-62 given a gold coin usually places the collector on alert for moderate abrasion of the coin's surfaces, yet bidders will be pleased to find little to detract from the quality offered by this nicer...
1140The Midwest Summer Sale on 07/24/2009$900.00
1878 XF.
Substantial luster remains within the well protected areas, suggesting an XF-40 assessment at the very least. No major issues affect this coin, though the obverse bears a few more circulation marks...
898The Midwest Winter Sale 2009 on 02/13/2009$1,000.00
1878 AU/rim cleaned.
Despite not being offensively bright, fields are a little unnaturally prooflike, indicative of a mild cleaning. However, as is the case with many examples, this coin was probably a little prooflike...
975The Collectors' Auction 2008 on 10/17/2008$1,350.00
1878 NGC AU-55.
Although one expects bountiful mint luster at the AU-55 level, this coin is unusually profuse in cartwheel effect, considering its circulated status. As one of the most available dates in the...
892The Midwest Winter Sale 2008 on 02/08/2008$975.00
1878 Three dollar EF-40
For the type collector requiring a three dollar gold representative grading "extremely fine", the perfect candidate is at hand. Pleasing apricot-gold surfaces retain ample definition for the grade,...
893The Midwest Winter Sale 2008 on 02/08/2008$1,350.00
1878 Three-dollar, ANACS AU-58 details, cleaned
At worst, the alleged "cleaning" of this type coin is subtle, characterized by a mere handful of wispy hairlines throughout both sides. Indeed, it is entirely possible (probable perhaps) that the...
894The Midwest Winter Sale 2008 on 02/08/2008$1,400.00
1878 Three dollar, MS-60
Were this coin any less attractive, a lengthy hairline in the left obverse field might deny certification, but your cataloger believes enough positive attributes exist to overcome this detraction. ...
895The Midwest Winter Sale 2008 on 02/08/2008$3,900.00
1878 Three-dollar, PCGS M-62
The obverse of this striking type coin is substantially mirrored cameo-prooflike, and therefore, since ever tiny post-mint defect is amplified, a conservative grade of MS-62 was assigned by PCGS. ...
896The Midwest Winter Sale 2008 on 02/08/2008$8,000.00
1878 NGC MS-64.
Extremely flashy, lustrous example of a coin type collectors often find difficult to locate in such a high grade. The marks in the obverse field, particularly in front of the Indian princess, and a...
1005The Collectors' Auction 2007 on 10/19/2007$1,400.00
1878 NGC AU-55.
Glittering orange-gold fields are a little reflective, and the strike is somewhat better than typical for the type. An awfully nice coin.
1006The Collectors' Auction 2007 on 10/19/2007$1,800.00
1878 NGC AU-58.
A rich orange-gold hue permeates this issue's lustrous surfaces. Just the slightest trace of friction is detected on the highest design elements of this minimally marked, admirably struck issue.
1007The Collectors' Auction 2007 on 10/19/2007$3,300.00
1878 NGC MS-61.
Comparatively attractive for the grade, despite the appearance of wispy field hairlines that flicker in and out of sight depending on the lighting angle. The luxuriant luster seems undiminished by...

1878 PCGS MS-61.
An opulent orange-gold swirls from this specimen's splendid velvetlike surfaces. Traces of sky blue nuances supplement its visual appeal. One delicate, almost indiscernible hairline is perceived...

1878 AU-55+.
An abundance of original mint luster permeates this specimen's satinlike surfaces. Lightly circulated with a sprinkling of minute marks discerned behind Liberty's head. The design element detailing...

1878 AU-55 Reverse Scrape.
This tougher date coin has solid AU+ detail and pleasing color. It is fully struck and has minimal wear for the grade. There is a small scrape at 6:00 on the reverse. It is not very distracting,...

1878 NCS UNC DETAILS.
This prevailing date within this popularly collected series has been conserved by Numismatic Conservation Services. As noted on its label, it had previously been subjected to an improper cleaning. ...

345The Collector's Auction on 10/20/2006$2,900.00
1878 NGC MS-60.
An intense radiance transmits from this specimen's highly lustrous surfaces. The robust cartwheel aspect portrayed by this issue camouflages a light array of contact ticks. Prominent design element...
