(About The Images)
1925-S NGC MS-65. 1925-S NGC MS-65.
Lot Title: 1925-S NGC MS-65.
Description: Nickels struck at San Francisco in the mid-1920s are infamous for their production problems, and 1925-S possesses notoriety as one of the foremost rarities in the entire series where a sharp strike is desired. However, deficiencies that usually plagued the date are scarcely apparent with this gorgeous example. Although not precisely "sharp", the strike is exceptional, bringing up all details to at least modest extent. Scattered planchet abrasions can be seen on the highpoints of the Indian's braid and cheekbone, as well as the bison's shoulder, but these were all present prior to the strike, which was not quite powerful enough to eradicate all the usual planchet production anomalies. Nonetheless, the horn is fully delineated and borders upon being completely rounded, and the hide is marvelously well detailed, as is the split tip of the tail. The mintmark is incredibly sharp, and pearlescent surface sheen flickers with rainbow iridescence around some devices, completing this lovely gem presentation.

Review of auction records shows that 1925-S seldom appears at the MS-65 level or higher, although examples graded MS-64 or lower (and typically given an inferior strike) abound. NGC has placed only 22 coins at the MS-65 level, with two higher, while PCGS has graded 18 at the same level, and a single coin higher, and without question, there are resubmissions included in these numbers. For the finicky aficionado who demands only the finest coins with the best possible strike quality, it is essentially impossible to improve upon this, thus the Scotsman Cataloger's Choice award is proudly awarded.

Shimmering tones of rose and blue can be observed on both the obverse and reverse of this very nice Buffalo Nickel. It has a soft strike, but most later S-Mint Nickels are the same way.
