Lot Title:
1872 PCGS AU-58.
Description:
Infrequently does opportunity arise for a diminutive circulated gold coin to warrant description as "stunning", yet no less an appellation is required in this case. One potential benefit of the grade of AU-58, which has been assigned on the PCGS green-label holder, is that the light rub implied by "slider" status may actually enhance the ability for metal to tone in those areas where limited circulation contact occurred. Observers will promptly notice that the immensely attractive copper-bronze tone that distinguishes this gem rises up from those areas that have seen friction from brief wear. Indeed, scrutiny with a glass shows that this is actually a significantly prooflike coin, with the obvious contrast between reflective fields and textured devices dignified by the remarkable, deep two-toned color scheme. The colorful bronzing includes iridescent midnight-blue accents that in turn feature minute, sparkling indigo flecks. Truly amazing!
Aside from the obvious aesthetic appeal, this 1872 quarter-eagle represents an era of low mintages and limited survival rates. Only 3000 coins were struck at Philadelphia, a production disproportionately low by comparison to the 18,000 minted in San Francisco that same year, and few remain in mint-state. Population reports suggest that perhaps a dozen examples grade MS-60 or higher, and one must assume resubmissions inflate that number, thus making finer AU-58 coins that that much more desirable in the marketplace. Excellent preservation of this example means that virtually no marks, and certainly none of obtrusive nature, exist to detract from the overall appearance, and there is no doubt that this is a better choice for type than a heavily abraded lower mint-state coin. Simply a marvelous coin, and one that surely merits the coveted Scotsman Cataloger's Choice award.
