Lot Title: Binder (1909 V.D.B. - 2008-D plus an additional 66 pieces from 1937 to 2007-S) of Lincoln cents.
Description: In this day of certified slabs, approval stickers and behemoth auctions or coin shows somewhere in the country just about every week of the year, it is interesting to ponder the vastly changed landscape of the numismatic community. For example, today, it would be possible to attend a single large coin show and assemble an entire collection of certified Lincoln cents, and in all probability, this could be done in uncirculated grades. There need not be much time or effort involved, given sufficient financial backing to accomplish this plan. A collector could, from his armchair over an evening's repose, go to any of hundreds of online website and accomplish the same feat - without even leaving his living room. Collections can be bought, made and sold practically in a matter of hours. Has the glamour of the hobby been lost? Has the collection process become little different from buying raw steak at the grocery store? No need to carve up the cow yourself, just let the butcher cut up the meat, wrap it up in newspaper, and he'll even season and sear it for you, if you wish. Dinner can be on the table in as many minutes as it takes for the microwave to ding-ding and tell you the food is hot.

It would be difficult to look through this marvelous collection of Lincoln cents and not be impressed by the effort shown in assembly of the collection. Rather than merely plugging coins into an album, or plugging credit card numbers into an internet coin site, this collector chose to select his coins as time and budget allowed, and used vinyl pages to store the 2x2 flips (many of them the original dealer's flips). All the coins expected of a standard collection are present, with the exception of the 1970-S small date, which is inadvertently substituted by a large date example. Keys are listed as: 1909-S (XF), 1909-S VDB (VF and struck on a very odd wood grained planchet), 1914-D (F), 1922 plain (VG/obverse minor digs), and 1931-S (XF). In addition, many early coins are uncirculated, such as 1909-VDB, 1909, 1917-D, 1919-S, 1922-D, a couple of coins in the 1930s, several in the 1940s, and many in the 1950s. Nearly all of the memorial coins are uncirculated, concluding with 2008-D. Finally, the collection concludes with all the proof wheat and memorial cents except for 1936, with highlights including: 1937 (PF-60/PVC), 1938 (PF-62), 1939 (PF-63), and all the rest from 1940 - 2007-S.

This lot may contain an item not certified by ANACS, PCGS, or NGC. While Scotsman Auction Co. is typically conservative in our descriptions of items not certified by one of these companies, we cannot guarantee our grading estimation will match their grade. We highly recommend that collectors seeking items certified by a third-party grading service only bid on items that have already been certified. No lot can be returned because of a variance in judgment with regards to grade.
