(About The Images)
1794 "Cent Style Wreath" (C-6a, R-5+) PCI VG-8/environmental damage. 1794 "Cent Style Wreath" (C-6a, R-5+) PCI VG-8/environmental damage.
Lot Title: 1794 "Cent Style Wreath" (C-6a, R-5+) PCI VG-8/environmental damage.
Description: 1794 saw nine basic die-marriages for half-cents, with C-6 the rarest, and also the combination with the lowest overall condition census. Although the condition census begins with a single VF example and then instantly drops into the VG range, the present example falls somewhat short of even that net grade, despite rather strong details, particularly on the reverse. Your cataloger would give 8 points of detail to the obverse, and 12 to the reverse, though corrosion has certainly taken a toll on overall sharpness. Some tiny scratches in the vicinity of the date have begun to efface the final digit, and evidence of the bulge just right of the date is likewise attenuated by the damage, but planchet roughness provides the most distraction, with darker encrustation strewn erratically across the reverse. Nonetheless, all legends and the date are easily readable without visual aid, and Liberty's portrait is a touch smoother than the surrounding fields, providing an appearance that is palatable for a coin of this scarcity. Unlike some examples, no major striking deficiency is noted, and the dies were in perfect alignment during production. EAC 3+ is a reasonable estimate of the net grade. Cataloger's note: edge lettering could not be examined due to the slab insert.

This lot may contain an item not certified by ANACS, PCGS, or NGC. While Scotsman Auction Co. is typically conservative in our descriptions of items not certified by one of these companies, we cannot guarantee our grading estimation will match their grade. We highly recommend that collectors seeking items certified by a third-party grading service only bid on items that have already been certified. No lot can be returned because of a variance in judgment with regards to grade.

156The Collectors' Auction - 2014 on 10/17/2014$190.00
1794 Good details.
Campania Estate. The reverse displays four old pinscratches within the wreath, and this is side rotated about 90 degrees with respect to the obverse. Ebony-grey overall, and low-contrast as a...

1794 (C-2a, R.2+) F/as described.
Consistent fine surface roughness affects both sides, but does not impair the cosmetic appeal to a major extent, as the texture is so fine as to have almost a frosty, matte appearance. Rather, it is...
266The Midwest Summer Sale 2014 on 07/18/2014$4,250.00
1794 (C-9, R.2) NGC XF-40.
Attributing C-9 begins with noticing that on the obverse, "4" almost touches the bust, and examining the reverse finds five berries on the left and four berries to the right, affirming the...
187The Collectors' Auction 2011 on 10/21/2011$1,350.00
1794 VF details/edge damage.
The obverse surface and the color for both sides are outstanding, with ideal walnut-brown shading the entire coin. Pile on top of that a treasure trove of detail, and one has a solid foundation for a...
118The Collectors' Auction 2010 on 10/15/2010$18,000.00
1794 (C-1, R.3) NGC MS-61 BN.
"1794" was originally punched in too low and all four digits repunched in correct position, with the "9" displaying the most obvious remaining underdigit. The reverse displays A2 recut, the "2" a...
119The Collectors' Auction 2010 on 10/15/2010$575.00
1794 (C-2a, R.2) PCGS GD-4.
The date is low, and positioning of the upper leaves of the wreath match up with attribution for C-2, a more common 1794 half-cent. Obverse details are nearer the VG grade. About a third of the...
120The Collectors' Auction 2010 on 10/15/2010$3,400.00
1794 (C-2a, R.2) ANACS XF-40.
Digits in 1794 are rather close together, and T in CENT is noticeably leaning left for attribution of C-2a, which is also indicated on the ANACS holder. A strong die-clash causes wreath leaves to...
121The Collectors' Auction 2010 on 10/15/2010$1,750.00
1794 (C-3a, R.5) PCGS VG-8.
"79" are a little close and the leaf pair is right of "T" on the reverse, giving a C-3a attribution. The reverse is rotated nearly ninety-degrees. This is a rare die marriage, given an R.5 rating in...
122The Collectors' Auction 2010 on 10/15/2010$775.00
1794 (C-4a, R.3) PCGS GD-4.
Bulging of the obverse lower-left is nearly extreme for this example, leading immediately to recognition of C-4a. All design elements are well flattened due to heavy wear, yet the date is full and...
123The Collectors' Auction 2010 on 10/15/2010$775.00
1794 (C-4a, R.3) PCGS GD-6.
No bulge present, but identification of C-4 is aided by the irregular stepped positioning of digits in the date, and widely spaced denominator in the fraction. Details may slightly exceed the PCGS...
124The Collectors' Auction 2010 on 10/15/2010$1,450.00
1794, Die State 4.0 (C-4a, R.3) DGS F-12.
The obverse is distinctive for the large bulge at the lower left, leading to quick attribution as C-4a, with minor die cracks on the reverse. Steely iridescence glows from the rich brown patina, with...
125The Collectors' Auction 2010 on 10/15/2010$1,200.00
1794 (C-5a, R.4+) PCGS VG-10.
"79" are a little close and the reverse has a short fraction bar with "1" nearly touching the knot above, leading to attribution of C-5a. A markedly attractive copper despite much wear that has...
126The Collectors' Auction 2010 on 10/15/2010$7,750.00
1794 (C-6a, R.5+) VG/nice color.
C-6 is the scarcest of all die marriages for 1794 half-cents, attributed by a "79" that is too close in the date, and by the positioning of the upper wreath leaves with relation to "T". Evidently a...
127The Collectors' Auction 2010 on 10/15/2010$600.00
1794 (C-9, R.2) DGS GD-6.
"4" nearly touches the bust and there are four berries on the right branch of the wreath, with visual placement cues necessary to finalize attribution as C-9, since the left branch is too faint to...
128The Collectors' Auction 2010 on 10/15/2010$4,500.00
1794 (C-9, R.2) NGC XF-40.
"4" almost touches the bust, with five berries left and four berries right giving a C-9 attribution, and apparently an early die-state with no cracks. NGC did pass through an era when they did not...
105The Midwest Winter Sale on 02/12/2010$390.00
1794 "Normal Head Type" (C-2a, R.2+) VG.
Considerable wear has gone to some extent to help smooth the surfaces, which may have become corroded early in this coin's existence. At this time, the corrupted areas show mostly on the obverse as...
86The Collectors' Auction 2009 on 10/16/2009$300.00
1794 (C-9, R-2) VG/damaged.
Moderate impact to the obverse has dented that side, and the resulting bulge on the reverse caused the denomination to wear away prematurely. The damage is most unfortunate since this coin has a...
87The Collectors' Auction 2009 on 10/16/2009$800.00
1794 "Normal Head" type, Close Date (C-2a, R-2+) F.

181The Collectors' Auction 2008 on 10/17/2008$1,800.00
1794 "C-1a, R.3" half-cent, VF.
Wide repunching of the date and a "T" that leans to the right in CENT determine an attribution of C-1A, with the "large letters edge" attribution also confirmed. Often seen with rotated dies -...
227The Midwest Winter Sale 2007 on 02/09/2007$5,750.00
1794 SM Edge Letters C-4A NGC AU-53 BN.
I kid you not, the color of this coin looks just like a fresh, warm moist brownie that is right out of the oven. It has very strong details and no distractions. There are a few small ticks on...
226The Midwest Summer Sale 2006 on 07/21/2006$1,550.00
1794 C-2a, R-2+. VF-30.
Clash marks from individual leaves on the reverse wreath are evident on this Manley Die State 2.0. The obverse depicts mostly smooth medium brown surfaces. While the reverse has the same appealing...
