(About The Images)
1796 (B-2) PCGS Genuine. 1796 (B-2) PCGS Genuine.
Lot Title: 1796 (B-2) PCGS Genuine.
Description: B-2 is not indicated on the PCGS insert, but is immediately attributed by the proximity to Liberty's bust of the final digit in the date, and it is the more common of the two known die-marriages. Further, your cataloger suggests VF-25 as an appropriate details grade, though the "code 98" indicates damage, which succinctly describes this coin's caveats. At first glance, the appearance is not entirely offensive, despite somewhat glossy surfaces indicative of cleaning. However, closer inspection immediately reveals innumerable scratches in the right obverse field, and numerous additional scratches scored erratically across either side, undoubtedly intended to smooth down the effect of some unknown surface aberration. More important is a long smoothed area on Liberty's bust that likely was the scene of a scratch at one time.

Despite all the negative comments just made, the wise collector will look at this coin and realize that the details are actually acceptably bold for the assigned grade, with little actual loss to circulation of major details. All the important curls are still visible in Liberty's hair, and nearly all of the eagle's wing feathers are still sharp. And again, it must be emphasized that for a coin likely destined for type purposes, the appearance is not as bad as may have been suggested. Have a look, and determine for yourself whether this coin is worthy of your bid.

1796 (B-2) PCGS Fair-2
Just plain heavily worn, neither side shows much sharpness at all, although the date remains astonishingly sharp for a coin this smooth. The obverse stars along the left side and perhaps 20% of the...

1796 (B-2) NGC AU details/holed.
Mile High Collection. NGC dutifully reports "holed" on the slab insert, though one scarcely needs a grading service to announce such a remarkable revelation for the present key date quarter. A...

1796 PCGS Genuine (XF details/smoothed).
Without question, sharpness verges on the AU level despite the PCGS assertion of only "XF details", as the strands in Liberty's hair stand up well separated while the eagle's wings reveal considerable...

1796 (B-1) NGC XF-40.
Eunice Peters Estate. So many first-date quarters have been ravaged over the years that it can almost seem startling to have an opportunity to acquire a certified non-problem example. NGC calls this...

1796 PCGS Fair-2.
As popularity of type collecting has burgeoned over the last twenty years, the value of the 1796 bust quarter has exploded, with even the lowest condition coins being worth thousands of dollars. Not...

1796 About Good.
Surfaces are amazingly choice for such a low-grade and rare quarter, deeply toned in appealing, old pewter-grey with graphite accents. Technically, the planchet is slightly bent, which is the reason...
443The Collectors' Auction 2008 on 10/17/2008$17,750.00
1796 "B-2", PCGS Genuine.
It is almost superfluous to mention that the B-2 is the more common of the two die marriages, as any quarter dated 1796 hardly qualifies as "common" regardless of the dies that were used to produce...

1796 Browning-2, Rarity-3. VF-30 Restored Surfaces and Cleaned.
Production of a mere 6,146 pieces is recorded for this issue's mintage, with two obverse dies employed in conjunction with a single reverse die to produce two die-marriages. This is the more commonly...
455The Midwest Winter Sale 2007 on 02/09/2007$2,000.00
1796 About Good-3 Holed.
With a minute mintage of 6,146, this coin is considered scarce in all grades. This About Good-3 example is holed at six o'clock and hits the bottom half of the seven, but it has retained a strong...

1796 Browning-1, Rarity-5. ANACS F-12 Details, Plugged-Cleaned.
Despite an amateur attempt to enhance its surfaces and its obvious damage repair work, this example visually eclipses the more often encountered low grade damaged issues. Just 6,146 pieces were...
