1878-CC PCGS MS-65. 1878-CC PCGS MS-65.
Lot Title: 1878-CC PCGS MS-65.
Description: Miraculous strike quality has conferred every last possible vestige of detail upon this inaugural issue. The level of intricate detail is a staggering attestment to the 19th century mint's capabilities, and there is no hesitation on your cataloger's part in calling this a FULLY struck Morgan dollar! In addition, preservation is fantastic, and it is obvious that this coin has been well cared for from the day it left Carson City. Indeed, one looks at the MS-65 grade and wonders why the coin was undergraded by two points (it is in a PCGS rattler holder, after all), but the presumptive reason for the very conservative assessment stems from a prominent grease stain on the eagle's left (observed) wing. Aside from that one detraction, abrasions are few and far between and have no impact on eye appeal.

High Estimate: $1,500.00

1878-CC (VAM-9) PCGS MS-65.

1878-CC PCGS MS-62, and an 1882-CC PCGS MS-62 (GSA).
Smithereen's Collection. PCGS identifies the latter as a GSA representative, though odds are that the 1878-CC came from GSA bags as well. This coin shows fragile aluminum-grey patina, but...
759The Midwest Summer Sale 2014 on 07/18/2014$360.00
1878-CC (VAM-22) PCGS MS-62PL (green label).
VAM-22 has not been designated, but as the green-label holder proves, the coin was certified long before PCGS attributed VAMs. Considerable bronze patina envelopes the obverse, while the reverse...

1878-CC PCGS MS-65.
Frothy matte texture emphasizes pure cotton-white brilliance everywhere, with very slight semi-prooflike effect still available from the well-used dies. Truth be told, Liberty's cheek seems to have a...

1878-CC GSA MS-62.
B. B. Consignment. Includes box and certificate. Light but fairly widespread abrasions on the obverse determine the overall grade, though the reverse shows nicer quality all by itself. Brilliant...

1878-CC PCGS MS-65.
One of the most impressively toned Carson City dollars in today's sale, both sides exhibit remarkable symmetry with regard to broad bull's-eye toning that covers the entire spectrum of pastel rainbow...
959The Midwest Summer Sale on 07/26/2013$625.00
1878-CC and 1884-CC, both GSA NGC MS-62.
Boxes and certificates included. The NGC MS-62 grade adequately conveys the expected level of abrasions across the obverse of both coins, though the reverse of the 1884-CC has avoided much contact...
960The Midwest Summer Sale on 07/26/2013$675.00
1878-CC (VAM-20) GSA MS-63.
Box and certificate included. A tiny thornlike die defect pokes into Liberty's eye to identify VAM-20. Pure white luster streams and flows from the fields for this example, and both sides exhibit...

1878-CC and 1882-CC, both NGC MS-63.
Frosty white luster dominates 1878-CC, and as usual, this is an incredibly well struck coin, fully detailed upon production. Subsequent bag storage has abraded the surfaces, which always seems to be...
679The Collectors' Auction 2012 on 10/05/2012$475.00
1878-CC GSA MS-63.
1878-CC may be common as a silver dollar under normal circumstances, but examples still in GSA holders are downright scarce in terms of market presence. They seldom show up, and most examples show...
680The Collectors' Auction 2012 on 10/05/2012$400.00
1878-CC NGC MS-64.
Sizzling luster scorches Liberty's portrait, with the entire coin struck to an extremely high level of sharpness. Indeed, this appears to be a 100% fully struck dollar. A vivid but small explosion...

1878-CC MS-63/slightly bent, 1883-CC MS-60/pvc damage, and an 1884-CC...
At first blush, the blazing eye-appeal emanating from three big, bad silver coins like this may prove too difficult to resist! These likely came from the great GSA hoard, though subsequent storage...
675The Midwest Summer Sale 2012 on 07/27/2012$1,050.00
1878-CC and 1890-CC, both PCGS MS-63 (rattler).
As is many times seen for the date, 1878-CC displays an outrageously sharp strike that probably is as complete as possible for a commercial striking, and the surfaces are silver-white except for a...
676The Midwest Summer Sale 2012 on 07/27/2012$550.00
1878-CC PCGS MS-64 CAC.
Impeccably sharp details speak to an amazing strike that brought up all the central curls on Liberty's portrait and left none of the eagle's breast feathers even remotely soft. Superb luster dances...
677The Midwest Summer Sale 2012 on 07/27/2012$420.00
1878-CC NGC MS-64 CAC.
A hint of silver-rose patina coasts inward from the rims, framing extensive, blazing luster that in turn surrounds the devices. This coin was struck incredibly well by newer dies, and every single...

1878-CC (VAM-17) GSA NGC MS-64.
The reverse is blast white, while the obverse is one shade off, exuding eggshell patina along with a splash of peach-gold toning in the lower right quadrant. Strike definition is almost impossibly...

1878-CC UNC details/cleaned, 1884-CC UNC details/planchet flaw, and...
None of these is likely to evade a "details only" grade at a certification service, but really, must every coin in the world be encapsulated? Of course not. Many collectors with budgetary...
827The Midwest Summer Sale 2011 on 07/29/2011$700.00
Two 1878-CC GSA (blue envelope) MS-60, and an 1885-O GSA (blue...
Both of the 1878-CC Morgans are VAM-2, easily recognized by the chip on Liberty's nose, while 1885-O is VAM-14, with a dash under the "8" and the mintmark shifted right. These all fall under the...
828The Midwest Summer Sale 2011 on 07/29/2011$875.00
Two 1878-CC NGC MS-64 and an 1882-CC NGC MS-62.
The 1878-CC dollars are both steam-white and extremely well struck, but the 1882-CC may have lost a point due to several coffee-brown spots that affect the portrait. The latter coin is also not as...
626The Collectors' Auction 2010 on 10/15/2010$600.00
1878-CC MS-60, 1879-CC VF, and 1880-CC XF details/questionable color.

627The Collectors' Auction 2010 on 10/15/2010$260.00
1878-CC (VAM-2) in GSA envelope MS-60.
Heavy abrasions and surface tone led to inclusion in the GSA hoard as a "circulated" 1878-CC Morgan dollar, but an MS-60 grade likely applies today. VAM-2 is instantly attributed by a booger on...
628The Collectors' Auction 2010 on 10/15/2010$675.00
Two 1878-CC, MS-63 and MS-61.
A pair of 1878-CC Morgan dollars, both of them uncirculated. These are fresh, original BU coins with no problems, though one is perceptibly superior to the other due to cleaner fields. Call one...
629The Collectors' Auction 2010 on 10/15/2010$425.00
1878-CC NGC MS-64.
The surface is engulfed in watercolor hues that present an astonishing, brushy mixture of Impressionist blue and cinnamon-gold tones throughout the obverse, while the reverse bears a more typical...

1878-CC PCGS MS-64.
Blazing luster is worthy of a gem, and for that matter, this coin falls close to that grade, featuring a mind-boggling sharp strike that has brought up every single possible detail on either side. ...
566The Midwest Winter Sale on 02/12/2010$850.00
1878-CC, 1890-O, and 1903. NGC MS-64.
Morgan dollars grade MS-64 in this group, according to NGC, and all of them are considerably more expensive in the next grade up, particularly on a percentage basis. 1878-CC features delicate...
567The Midwest Winter Sale on 02/12/2010$625.00
1878-CC GSA NGC MS-64.
Flashy and semi-reflective, specifically on the obverse. If one covered the grade and showed this coin to a handful of dealers and collectors, how many of them would guess it graded MS-65? For that...
568The Midwest Winter Sale on 02/12/2010$560.00
1878-CC PCGS MS-64PL.
A tenuous layer of almond-beige haze appears to occupy both sides and may be inhibiting reflectivity to some extent. It is possible that proper conservation would reveal even stronger prooflike...
569The Midwest Winter Sale on 02/12/2010$1,200.00
1878-CC PCGS MS-65.
Crystal clear luster provides outstanding eye appeal and nearly attains a semi-prooflike appearance, since both Liberty's portrait and the eagle on the reverse are finely layered with frosty texture. ...

1878-CC NGC MS-65.
Utterly delightful butter-gold patina melts gracefully across the fields, supplanted by frosty-grey surface texture that characterizes most of Liberty's portrait. The toning pattern is dispersed...

904The Midwest Summer Sale on 07/24/2009$460.00
1878-CC NGC MS-64.
Rather nice for the grade, because even though Liberty's cheek is mildly abraded, the fields are softly lustrous and show no defects. Frosty white.

1878-CC and 1884-CC Morgan dollars, NGC MS-64.
Both of these Carson City products exhibit blast white beauty, and they probably originally derived from the famed GSA hoard. Though each is at least somewhat prooflike, NGC did not supply that...

1878-CC Morgan dollar, MS-63 PL.
Myriad wiry die polish lines could erroneously be mistaken as hairlines by the inexperienced observer. Just enough reflectivity and cameo contrast validate the “prooflike” designation for this...

1878-CC Morgan dollar, PCGS MS-66

Roll of 1878-CC Uncirculated Morgan Silver Dollars.

1878-CC and 1883-CC PCI MS-64.

602The Collector's Auction on 10/20/2006$280.00
1878-CC PCI MS-64 PL.
Very flashy surfaces and frosty devices give this coin a cameo appearance. The grade number appears dead on, but it would probably need to be a tad more reflective to earn the PL designation at PCGS...

1878-CC PCGS MS-64.

A blazing white Carson City issue with absolutely no distractions or problems. It is fully lustrous and has super sharp detail.
