Lot Title:

1805 (LM-1, V-1, R-4) PCGS VF-20.
Description:
Whether a collectors of series or type, everyone who pursues half-dimes becomes quickly confronted by the great difficulty of locating problem-free examples, or at least those with minimal issues. This example in a PCGS holder is not quite perfect, but is a far cry nicer than the bent, abused and mutilated coins that are most frequently available. These were manufactured on such thin, small planchets that handling inevitably took its toll on most surviving specimens, and we are left today with only a limited supply to satisfy unsatiable demand. Very attractive patina dominates this small coin, distributed primarily in earth tones at the edges, modulating into surprisingly bright steel-blue color at the center. This is a mere supposition on your cataloger's part, but the tone patter looks almost as if the coin had been taped into an album at one time -- an indignant abuse to be sure! Nevertheless, the patina is exceptionally attractive and looks entirely original. Two digs, one on either side of Liberty's upper portrait, are worthy of note, the reverse being remarkably free of any distractions. Each side is properly centered. One characteristic of LM-1 is the damaged reverse die, and this what caused weakness on the eagle's right (observed) wing. Fabulous coin, and a very, very tough one at that.
