Strictly speaking, in order for a 20th century type set to truly be considered complete, both Pan-Pacific $50 gold commemorative coins are required. Likewise, both are required to complete a 13-piece gold commemorative set. While for some collectors this feat is not possible because of financial reasons, others strive to obtain one specimen that falls within their budget. For those collectors, we present this genuine example that displays strong AU attributes.
PCGS abstained from assigning a numercal grade to this coin, referencing code 98, which indicates surface damage. However, the coin is still housed in a PCGS holder per their new service in which they encapsulate problem coins and state on the label that the coin is 'Genuine.'
The surface damage observed by the graders at PCGS refers to a surface aberration in the field left of the owl’s head that looks like miniture claw marks. Otherwise, this coin has the general overall appearance of a very high-end almost uncirculated coin, at the very least. Only the slightest indication of any rub whatsoever is visible, and the luster presence seen under a light is commendable, particularly on the reverse. When the obverse is tilted outside of a light source, however, it has a somewhat polished look, leading us to believe that this coin has probably been cleaned.
Ultimately, the imperfections listed above will allow someone to obtain this huge gold coin for a discount, thereby getting that collector one step closer to a fully complete set.
