(About The Images)
1896 $5.00. VG. 1896 $5.00. VG.
Lot Title: 1896 $5.00. VG.
Description: Fr-269. The demand for educational notes never goes down, so a well worn example like this provides a meaningful alternative to a much more expensive note. This five has been flattened and pressed, and the center crease is separated at the top.

This lot may contain an item not certified by ANACS, PCGS, or NGC. While Scotsman Auction Co. is typically conservative in our descriptions of items not certified by one of these companies, we cannot guarantee our grading estimation will match their grade. We highly recommend that collectors seeking items certified by a third-party grading service only bid on items that have already been certified. No lot can be returned because of a variance in judgment with regards to grade.

63The Midwest Summer Sale 2014 on 07/18/2014$1,850.00
1896 $5 VF.
Fr# 268. Excellent presentation at VF for this extremely popular educational note. An attempt was made to repair two small edge tears toward the left of the top margin, but we were not fooled.
38The Midwest Summer Sale on 07/26/2013$1,700.00
1896 $5.00. VF.
Fr# 269. A very-fine example of the most popular of the "educational series" of notes. The paper faces up well, but a small edge tear just breaks into the extreme right margin.
149The Collectors' Auction 2012 on 10/05/2012$1,750.00
1896 $5.00. F.
Fr# 270. Highly acceptable for the "fine" level, especially as this is an original, unpressed note. The grade could be higher if not for a half-dozen pinholes left of center.
63The Midwest Summer Sale 2011 on 07/29/2011$7,000.00
1896 $5.00. PMG AU-50.
Fr. 270. Remarkably luminescent paper exhibits the famed "Education Note" motifs to best advantage, and each side is pretty well centered. Faces up practically as UNC, with very dark serial numbers.
51The Midwest Summer Sale 2010 on 07/23/2010$1,000.00
1896 $5.00. F.
Fr# 268. The $5 silver certificate is the third and last of the popular "educational series". An allegorical group of figures on the front demonstrate that electricity is the dominant force in the...
52The Midwest Summer Sale 2010 on 07/23/2010$1,950.00
1896 $5.00. VF.
Fr# 268. Incredibly original, this gorgeous "educational series" note has never been pressed, and remains just as the day it was set aside from someone's wallet. It has been allowed to retain the...
133The Midwest Winter Sale 2009 on 02/13/2009$675.00
1896 $5.00 VG.
Fr-269. A well used 1896 education note that might have graded fully "fine" if not for some smallish internal tears at the folds. A little dim, as would be expected of a worn note, but a serviceable...
134The Midwest Winter Sale 2009 on 02/13/2009$2,600.00
1896 $5.00. PMG VF-25.
Fr-269. One thing that becomes instantly apparent when viewing this note is that it has never been pressed. Every fold that accounted for the grade can be clearly seen. Vivid ink color remains.
113The Midwest Winter Sale 2008 on 02/08/2008$9,000.00
1896 CHCU
Fr-269. If you are still seeking this type, but are waiting for a truly original, truly bright, truly colorful, and truly crisp CHCU example, then your search is over. This note is, frankly, flat...
116The Midwest Winter Sale 2008 on 02/08/2008$1,325.00
1896 $5.00. F.
Fr-270. An original, above average Fine example from the popular Educational series. Three fairly heavy folds separates the note into four equal quarters, but the note is still fairly crisp, and it...
154The Midwest Summer Sale 2007 on 07/27/2007$525.00
1896 $5.00. VG.
Fr-270. Popular type in all grades, and a note part of one of the most in-demand series -- the Educational series. The front looks nicer than the grade assigned, but a tape repair and toning seen on...
160The Midwest Winter Sale 2007 on 02/09/2007$6,000.00
1896 $5.00. AU.
Fr-270. The centering is virtually perfect on this Educational that some may consider CU. It is bright, but a tiny area on the bottom margin appears to have been lightly nicked, so AU is probably...
166The Midwest Winter Sale 2007 on 02/09/2007$2,600.00
1896 $5.00. VF.
Fr-270. The scarcest signature combination of the three Friedberg numbers for this persistently popular Educational type. It appears lightly pressed, but the color is nice for the grade, and so are...
144The Midwest Summer Sale 2006 on 07/21/2006$1,750.00
1896 $5.00. VF.
Fr-270. One of the most popular types in the Silver Certificate series. This example is very pretty with a positive layout and mostly bright paper. There appears to be a waxy gloss on areas of the...
