Lot Title:

1896 NGC MS-68.
|
Description:
|
For all practical purposes, MS-69 is the highest possible grade that a business strike quarter-eagle can aspire to, as MS-70 represents theoretical perfection, an impractical aspiration, especially given 19th century minting technology. Therefore, for an 1896 quarter-eagle to achieve an MS-68 grade is a momentous event, and indeed, population reports show that no other example exists in this grade at NGC or PCGS (where 3 have reached only the MS-67 level), and only 42 examples from the entire $2.50 Liberty series have qualified for the MS-68 grade (none higher). Further, supply of this date is limited by any measure, since only 19,070 pieces were struck. The astonishing appearance of this wonder-gem begins with an exacting strike that has imparted every single detail available from the dies, which themselves were undoubtedly still fresh from such a restrained output level. So precise is the sculpting of even the most minute details that extensive repunching of LIBERTY is amazingly bold, and every single segment in the border is decisively squared off. Needless to say, every star and every strand of hair is completely delineated. Ravishing surfaces shimmer with mint luster that features an extremely fine matte texture under high power magnification, but yields a matchless level of satiny effect under normal viewing circumstances. It wouldn't be possible to compress more cartwheel effect onto such a small coin! Finally, from the standpoint of preservation, there is no question about the original and unblemished surface quality, as a couple of mild copper spots remain on the reverse, and three or four tiny carbon spots rest on the obverse, the most prominent having settled atop Liberty's hair. "Improvement" of the surfaces -- an uncalled for abuse which occurs all too often with high grade gold-- has not happened to this wonderful coin, and the creamy-smooth luster remains just as it was when the coin was separated from the dies. An utterly fabulous piece that could easily be a cornerstone in any supreme gold type set. Cataloger's note: this lot is accompanied by a Swiss America Trading Corporation wooden presentation box.

Nicer than expected for MS-64, and quite likely a "plus" candidate. The luster and especially the sharpness are exceptional, and the only distractions are a very few minor, shallow handling marks on... |

Refreshingly unabraded in the fields for just the MS-62 grade, with slightly prooflike character apparent at some viewing angles. Indeed, given the sharp strike and clean fields, one might be tempted... |
