Lot Title: 1786 Vermont Copper, "VERMONTENSIUM" variety. Ryder 6, Rarity-3, 114.1 grains. VF.
Description: An unusually nice Ryder-6 sold in a Heritage sale about two years ago, and it featured fabulous caramel color and remarkable surface quality. While the present coin suffers some ill effect from environmental exposure, such as a very dark appearance and minor low-relief roughness, it also features details that are centered very well on the planchet, including a date that is fully legible and bold -- desirable features not present on the Heritage coin. The all-seeing eye is nicely impressed at the center, gradually fading into weaker rays and edge devices as the perimeter is approached, and continued observation reveals that this side is a bit off center, with the result being that the tops of QUARTA are off the planchet. A small clip of the obverse at 2:00 is noted. Vermont landscape coins are notorious for being struck on miserable planchet stock, so bearing that in mind, the present coin is above average for the type. Residue from conservation yields a somewhat glossy appearance, but hinders the eye appeal not at all.

This lot may contain an item not certified by ANACS, PCGS, or NGC. While Scotsman Auction Co. is typically conservative in our descriptions of items not certified by one of these companies, we cannot guarantee our grading estimation will match their grade. We highly recommend that collectors seeking items certified by a third-party grading service only bid on items that have already been certified. No lot can be returned because of a variance in judgment with regards to grade.
