(About The Images)
1875-S XF/lightly cleaned. 1875-S XF/lightly cleaned.
Lot Title: 1875-S XF/lightly cleaned.
Description: Subtle hairlines traverse the obverse from northeast to southwest, and are accountable for the slightly cloudy appearance, particularly of the obverse. However, inspection reveals a lot of cartwheel effect on the reverse, placing the details in the upper reaches of XF. A "normal mintmark" variety.

This lot may contain an item not certified by ANACS, PCGS, or NGC. While Scotsman Auction Co. is typically conservative in our descriptions of items not certified by one of these companies, we cannot guarantee our grading estimation will match their grade. We highly recommend that collectors seeking items certified by a third-party grading service only bid on items that have already been certified. No lot can be returned because of a variance in judgment with regards to grade.

Low Estimate: $190.00
High Estimate: $240.00

1875-S AU details.
$ mintmark due to repunching. Examination reveals lightly abraded devices that may show evidence of slight cleaning in addition to just light wear, but considerable luster definitely remains in the...
621The Collectors' Auction 2013 on 10/18/2013$1,250.00
1875-S NGC MS-64.
7070 Collection. Predominantly silver-bright, with forest-blue and mottled earth tone coloration splashing away from Liberty's portrait on the obverse. The reverse sees a similar pattern of color...
622The Collectors' Auction 2013 on 10/18/2013$1,700.00
1875-S NGC MS-64+.
Memorably sharp overall, with minute, localized softness at only the eagle's right (observed) talon and at the two top obverse stars. It isn't obvious what bars a gem grade, but the luster does...
623The Collectors' Auction 2013 on 10/18/2013$2,400.00
1875-S NGC MS-65.
Details are brought up to unexpectedly high relief for the type, with the eagle's breast particularly well rounded and defined. Extremely potent luster swoops all around the fields in dizzying...
520The Collectors' Auction 2012 on 10/05/2012$400.00
1875-S PCGS AU-55.
S/S. Despite five points of circulation, surfaces are almost completely white, aside from a single dark spot near the exact center of the obverse. Other tiny dark crumbs scatter here and there, and...
521The Collectors' Auction 2012 on 10/05/2012$6,250.00
1875-S NGC MS-65 PL.
1875-S shows a lower mintage (680,000) than the really common dates, and that might help the odds for prooflike examples. There is no doubt about the present coin, as either side is a dead-on ringer...
492The Midwest Summer Sale 2012 on 07/27/2012$250.00
1875-S AU details/cleaned.
Dull grey due to cleaning, or possibly harsh chemical treatment. Fortunately, the coin retains the benefit of strong details, and a few years in the right type of numismatic storage might do wonders...
493The Midwest Summer Sale 2012 on 07/27/2012$950.00
1875-S/S, MPD-2. PCGS MS-62 CAC.
Incredibly original, with a nice, thick layer of silver-beige patina that dominates each side wall-to-wall. Easily recognizable by an extensive network of die cracks, the reverse was obviously struck...
494The Midwest Summer Sale 2012 on 07/27/2012$3,800.00
1875-S PCGS MS-65.
Traces of luminous moon-gold album toning decorate the peripheral areas of the obverse, and are joined by sprigs of lovely olive-green scattered about the reverse. This is one knockout type coin,...
614The Midwest Summer Sale 2011 on 07/29/2011$3,500.00
1875-S NGC MS-65.
Exquisite sharpness dominates most of the eagle's plumage, gradually softening only at the uppermost edge of his left (observed) wing. Such excellent production spills over to the obverse as well,...
380The Collectors' Auction 2010 on 10/15/2010$195.00
1875-S PCGS XF-40.
The mintmark is nicely repunched, one of several known RPMs for the 1875-S twenty-cent piece. Surfaces display gunmetal-blue patina and details that are a touch soft for the XF-40 grade, but no...
473The Midwest Summer Sale 2010 on 07/23/2010$550.00
1875-S/S and 1876 VF.
The 1875-S/S grades VF-35 and just barely falls shy of the XF level. Repunching of the mintmark is exceptionally bold on this early die-state example. The 1876 is a trifle glossy beneath darker...
474The Midwest Summer Sale 2010 on 07/23/2010$250.00
1875-S/S XF.
Pale surfaces are endowed with surprisingly little luster, given a grade close to AU, although the reverse displays some cartwheel effect. The obverse right field is mildly stained with...
361The Midwest Winter Sale on 02/12/2010$220.00
1875-S/S AU/cleaned.
Lustrous tin-grey with faint hairlines on each side seem indicative of a mild cleaning. This is quite unfortunate since the overall preservation is at or very near the AU level.
362The Midwest Winter Sale on 02/12/2010$210.00
1875-S Twenty-cent piece VF and an 1876-CC Seated quarter Fine.
LIBERTY displays essentially completely on the 1875-S twenty-cent coin, and is boldly readable on the 1876-CC quarter. This latter coin has a very small rim ding that is already accounted for in the...

1875-S PCGS XF-45.
An 1875-S twenty-cent coin, graded XF-45 by PCGS.
364The Midwest Winter Sale on 02/12/2010$340.00
1875-S AU.
Extensive cartwheel effect may be seen in the fields of both sides, interrupted only by a touch of wear in the most exposed areas, as well, of course, as a little wear on the devices. Nicely struck,...
365The Midwest Winter Sale on 02/12/2010$500.00
1875-S PCGS MS-62.
Excessively dense smoky-tan patina drapes across the obverse fields and rests atop the reverse devices, and provides a compellingly "different" low-contrast appearance. Some carbon spots have...
299The Collectors' Auction 2009 on 10/16/2009$290.00
1875-S XF.
If a collector needed the perfect type coin for a grading set to represent XF-40, this would be the best possible choice. There could not be a more perfect example of the grade! Exceedingly original...
300The Collectors' Auction 2009 on 10/16/2009$160.00
1875-S/S VF/lightly cleaned.
The repunched mintmark of this 1875-S is aligned in such a manner as to give it the appearance of a dollar sign ($), and many collectors seek out this particular RPM for that reason. Subtle shift in...
301The Collectors' Auction 2009 on 10/16/2009$210.00
1875-S XF.
The mintmark is repunched, leading to a very thick appearance. This is a sharply detailed coin that isn't far from the AU level, but very mild hairlines in the fields are revealed under close...
625The Midwest Summer Sale on 07/24/2009$502.00
1875-S/S MS-61.
Gentle luster sweeps uninterrupted through the fields, though an imperfect strike imparted indistinct details and Liberty's head and did not quite strike up the eagle's central breast feathers. ...
626The Midwest Summer Sale on 07/24/2009$7,250.00
1875-S NGC MS-66.
Wonderfully clean and softly glowing fields exhibit ravishing luster that abounds with elegant beauty. Despite its proper status as a common type coin, seldom does one find an 1875-S twenty-cent coin...
627The Midwest Winter Sale 2009 on 02/13/2009$220.00
1875-S/S AU details.
Though light circulation has worn away a little original luster, this coin has apparently been dipped multiple times, resulting in very white surfaces and additional loss of flowlines. The "S"...
442The Collectors' Auction 2008 on 10/17/2008$270.00
1875-S/S XF.
Despite several points of wear, the heavily repunched mint mark is apparent even without a glass. This is a pleasantly detailed coin that offers hints of mint luster beneath a very thick olive-gold...
540The Midwest Winter Sale 2008 on 02/08/2008$210.00
1875-S Twenty Cent, retained reverse cud VF-30
In addition to being simply a flat-out beautiful, original type coin, this twenty-cent provides the added interest if a nice retained cud on the reverse. A die break through UNIT, along with other...
454The Collectors' Auction 2007 on 10/19/2007$600.00
Three 1875-S.
Each of the twenty-cent examples included in this lot features a different type of mintmark. The 1875-S "clear S" has AU-50 details but has been dipped, the 1875-S/S grades XF-40, and the 1875-S...
455The Collectors' Auction 2007 on 10/19/2007$320.00
1875-S ANACS AU-55.
A mottled combination of tobacco brown, deep purple, and champagne glaze partially fills the margins of this semi-prooflike odd-denomination coin. A good strike has imparted excellent definition...
456The Collectors' Auction 2007 on 10/19/2007$245.00
1875-S AU-58 Details, Lightly Cleaned Obverse.
What appears to be a very choice AU coin at first glance unfortunately does not quite live up to expectations under closer examination. Under certain viewing angles, multiple parallel hairlines...

1875-S XF-45.
This is an admirable circulated example from the San Francisco Branch Mint from the first year of issue for this short lived denomination. Its pewter enhanced surfaces exhibit no visibly abusive...

1875-S/S XF-45.
The pseudonym "$" is given to this interesting doubled punched "S" mintmarked variety. It shows the serifs from the first "S" protruding from the top and bottom of the corrected mintmark. Also seen...

1875-S/S XF Detail Cleaned.

453The Midwest Winter Sale 2007 on 02/09/2007$180.00
1875-S XF-40.
A venerable example for the first year of issue for this curious denomination. Its original light silver surfaces are decorated with a delicate blend of crimson and blue. A rather handsome specimen...
1044The Collector's Auction on 10/20/2006$260.00
1875-S XF-45.
This specimen's original surfaces are enhanced by a blush of pale rose and intertwined light blue. A few scant hairlines and ticks are noticed, but plenty of detail from the strong strike remain.
1045The Collector's Auction on 10/20/2006$875.00
1875-S NGC MS-62.
This specimen's glowing surfaces radiate a velvetlike aspect with only the most delicate hairlines and minuscule ticks to be observed. A faint pattern of die striations are noticed just to the...
1239The Midwest Summer Sale 2006 on 07/21/2006$170.00

1875-S AU-55+.
