(About The Images)
1894 PCGS AU-50. 1894 PCGS AU-50.
Lot Title: 1894 PCGS AU-50.
Description: Examples of 1894 are eagerly sought in grades of lustrous AU, since the cost of truly uncirculated examples escalates rapidly into thousands of dollars above MS-60. This coin is very white, having undoubtedly been dipped at some time so as to fit more adequately into an uncirculated collection, yet the remaining original luster is unimpaired, and indeed is probably a touch stronger than expected for just AU-50. Because of the paleness, the innumerable tiny circulation marks seem a little exaggerated, but none of them is singularly prominent.
Low Estimate: $1,450.00
High Estimate: $1,700.00
Lot Status: Bidding has been closed for this lot.

846The Midwest Summer Sale 2014 on 07/18/2014$900.00
1894 PCGS VF-35.
JRC Set. Key in every grade, 1894 has a propensity to show up in better circulated grades such as the present VF-35. Deep citrus-bronze toning filters down from the obverse rims, but overall the...
847The Midwest Summer Sale 2014 on 07/18/2014$1,550.00
1894 NGC AU-55.
Smooth, consistent wear leaves each side only lightly abraded, and close to fully white despite brief circulation. Struck only to average standards for the date, the very center of each side displays...
928The Collectors' Auction 2013 on 10/18/2013$650.00
1894 F, and an 1895-O F.
Roman Powers Collection. Both have been either dipped or lightly cleaned, but do not necessarily offend the eye. These have comparable detail at the Fine level, although the 1895-O may display...
929The Collectors' Auction 2013 on 10/18/2013$1,000.00
1894 NGC XF-40.
B. B. Consignment. As a key in the XF grade, 1894 can be difficult to find with natural, original tone, but this one displays exceptional, crunchy patina and lovely coal accents. The surfaces are...
930The Collectors' Auction 2013 on 10/18/2013$1,000.00
1894 NGC XF-45.
Eye-appeal might well be every bit of AU, although the value of 1894 doesn't escalate all that rapidly in this grade range. Considerable luster emanates from near-white surfaces, with really only...
931The Collectors' Auction 2013 on 10/18/2013$2,750.00
1894 NGC MS-61.
Frequently cited as one of the top few keys in most grades, at MS-61, 1894 becomes slightly more available by comparison to the many condition-rarities in the Morgan dollar series, yet will set...
1011The Midwest Summer Sale on 07/26/2013$1,000.00
1894 PCGS VF-20.
An exquisite example of this, one of the first-tier keys to the Morgan dollar series, the surfaces exhibit perfection in terms of dove-grey patina with pleasing charcoal tints in and around the...
1012The Midwest Summer Sale on 07/26/2013$1,100.00
1894 PCGS XF-45.
Smooth, stable dove-grey patina shows no distractions at all save a slightly darker streak in front of Liberty’s chin and a small dark particle on the eagle's left (observed) wing. Very slightly...
806The Collectors' Auction 2012 on 10/05/2012$1,000.00
1894 NGC XF-40.
One of the standard keys to the series, this XF-40 1894 appears to be undergraded by five points at NGC. The obverse retains substantially more luster than is usually seen for XF, with the reverse...
807The Collectors' Auction 2012 on 10/05/2012$1,150.00
1894 PCGS AU details/cleaned.
The so-called "cleaning" cannot amount to much, as this looks just about like any other AU coin on the market today. Steely patina layers atop the highest design elements, but the majority of the...
726The Midwest Summer Sale 2012 on 07/27/2012$2,900.00
1894 PCGS MS-61.
1894 is a key to the Morgan dollar series in any grade, of course, but unlike some of the hotly contested keys, it isn't subject to the whims of huge upswings in value at the MS-61 threshold. A nice,...
727The Midwest Summer Sale 2012 on 07/27/2012$3,000.00
1894 NGC MS-62.
Expansive cartwheel effect shimmers gently beneath steam-grey surfaces, endowed with delicate apricot accents near the rims and at the edge of some design elements. While the flowline luster is...
793The Collectors' Auction 2011 on 10/21/2011$1,650.00
1894 PCGS AU-58.
When properly graded, a coin that is at the AU-58 grade level should look UNC at first glance, and that is definitely the case here, as gleaming multi-spoked cartwheel emanates from the fields of this...
911The Midwest Summer Sale 2011 on 07/29/2011$1,400.00
1894 NGC AU-53.
1893-S gets all the accolades as "king" of the Morgan dollar series, but mintage for 1894 was less than 11% higher than that of its esteemed associate. Yet it is valued far lower, even in nicer AU...
707The Collectors' Auction 2010 on 10/15/2010$1,750.00
1894 AU.
Put this coin in front of the top graders in the business and you would no doubt have an even split between those who call it Uncirculated and those that call it AU. It is just one of those coins. ...
824The Midwest Summer Sale 2010 on 07/23/2010$750.00
1894 VF/cleaned.
Much too bright for a coin with only VF-20 details, although time has recovered a little chalky-tan patina on the high points. A lengthy pinscratch is notable in the obverse left field, along with a...
825The Midwest Summer Sale 2010 on 07/23/2010$850.00
1894 VF/lightly cleaned.
Impossibly bright surfaces for the VF-35 details grade are the result of an aggressive scrubbing that has left this key Morgan much too white, and also made the surfaces susceptible to PVC, which is...
826The Midwest Summer Sale 2010 on 07/23/2010$850.00
1894 XF/scratched.
Just enough luster remains beneath aluminum-grey patina to suggest preservation at or just above the XF grade level, although an array of faint, erratic hairlines indicate an old, incidental cleaning...
827The Midwest Summer Sale 2010 on 07/23/2010$800.00
1894 XF/cleaned.
Harsh brilliance is the result of an aggressive cleaning that precludes any possibility of original luster. Well defined, this coin appears to retain XF details, but will need considerable time to...
828The Midwest Summer Sale 2010 on 07/23/2010$1,100.00
1894 PCGS XF-40.
Graphite-grey surfaces are obviously original, featuring occasional dove-grey accents, especially above Liberty's ear and atop a few of the leaves on the reverse. An interesting and subtle change to...
829The Midwest Summer Sale 2010 on 07/23/2010$1,100.00
1894 PCGS XF-40.
Leather-grey surfaces are somewhat unusual for the type, indicative of unusual storage in the coin's past. On the whole, the effect is rather likable, and evidence of dusky rainbow iridescence shows...
830The Midwest Summer Sale 2010 on 07/23/2010$1,150.00
1894 NGC XF-45.
Great pleasure can be taken in collecting Morgan dollars with light circulation, particularly by focusing on wholesome, original coins with no problems. While 1894 is not an inexpensive coin in any...
831The Midwest Summer Sale 2010 on 07/23/2010$1,150.00
1894 AU/lightly cleaned.
Mildly cleaned (probably with water and baking soda) so as to appear BU, but fortunately, this semi-key is so close to mint-state (AU-55 details) that the brilliance is not all that appalling. ...
832The Midwest Summer Sale 2010 on 07/23/2010$1,200.00
1894 NGC AU-53.
Somewhat chalky due to pale fields, with a slender ribbon of copper-gold tone around the rims.
626The Midwest Winter Sale on 02/12/2010$1,000.00
1894 PCGS Genuine.
A thoroughly unnatural stark aluminum-grey countenance bears witness to an overly harsh cleaning that has removed nearly all vintage surface quality. Although hints of luster still glimmer from the...
640The Collectors' Auction 2009 on 10/16/2009$675.00
1894 VF/cleaned/PVC.
Lightly cleaned, yet the faintest hints of luster still pervade near the rims, and a rim bump can be seen beneath the date. Still, details are quite bold for this semi-key, ensuring some level of...
641The Collectors' Auction 2009 on 10/16/2009$1,650.00
1894 PCGS AU-58.
Morgan dollar collectors know that 1894 features the second-lowest mintage of regular issue coins in the series, with only 110,000 struck. Flashy luster and surprisingly untoned surfaces imbue this...
642The Collectors' Auction 2009 on 10/16/2009$2,400.00
1894 NGC MS-61.
A mintage just slightly above that of the 1893-S assures 1894 of key-date status in the Morgan dollar series, and the rapidly escalating value in grades above MS-60 confirms strong demand. NGC's...
1004The Midwest Summer Sale on 07/24/2009$1,650.00
1894 PCGS AU-55.
A heaping supply of mint luster figures prominently into the realization that this very difficult key Morgan dollar retains nearly all of its mint state appearance. Flowline luster sweeps through all...
1005The Midwest Summer Sale on 07/24/2009$1,550.00
1894 NGC AU-55.
Details are stronger than expected of the AU grade level, particularly the eagle's breast feathers, which have surrendered just a little detail at the center to wear. Luster is relegated only to the...
1006The Midwest Summer Sale on 07/24/2009$3,400.00
1894 NGC PF-63.
There are times when it can be difficult to assess (or at least spell out) the reasons that a coin is graded the way that it is, and that is the case here. A coin graded PF-63 typically suffers...
796The Midwest Winter Sale 2009 on 02/13/2009$800.00
1894 VG/cleaned.
Not hairlined to death, but pasty white surfaces are clearly not original. The date and rims are very bold, and there are no marks out of character for such a well circulated dollar.
797The Midwest Winter Sale 2009 on 02/13/2009$625.00
1894 ANACS VF-25 details/obverse rim damage.
The "obverse rim damage" referenced on the ANACS label is annoyingly concealed by the slab insert, but appears to be accounted for by some rim dings at the upper right rim of the obverse. Aside from...
798The Midwest Winter Sale 2009 on 02/13/2009$1,050.00
1894 NGC VF-25.
Extremely original and free of any large marks or abrasions that could rightfully be expected of a coin that took thirty-five points of wear in circulation. Of course, the time so spent did inflict...
799The Midwest Winter Sale 2009 on 02/13/2009$1,050.00
1894 PCGS VF-35.
Temptingly close to a fully XF-40 grade, though PCGS may have chosen a conservative stance based on the number of abrasions on Liberty's cheek. Irrefutably original in every possible way.
725The Collectors' Auction 2008 on 10/17/2008$725.00
1894 PCGS GD-6.
By today's standards, a Morgan dollar graded "good" may well have incomplete rims, but usually, G-6 is reserved only for coins with good rims, and that is the case here. This exceedingly original coin...
726The Collectors' Auction 2008 on 10/17/2008$1,275.00
1894 VF
Battleship-grey accents over steely surfaces are occasionally challenged by a touch of bronze toning, especially on the reverse. A small rim nick on the far right reverse rim is the only disturbance...
727The Collectors' Auction 2008 on 10/17/2008$1,150.00
1894 PCGS VF-30.
Ivory-grey color is unquestionably original, and less than a handful of trivial circulation marks do not detract at all from this moderately worn coin's wholesome eye appeal. 1894 is recognizable as...
728The Collectors' Auction 2008 on 10/17/2008$1,600.00
1894 PCGS XF-40.
Purely original dove-grey surfaces attest to meticulous preservation since the day this coin was carefully retrieved from circulation and placed aside for future generations. PCGS has assigned the...
729The Collectors' Auction 2008 on 10/17/2008$1,000.00
1894 ANACS PF-50 Details, Cleaned.
Murky yellowish patina subdues this coin's brilliance and considerably reduces the effects of an old cleaning, and the addition of ten points of wear give this coin something of a "business strike"...
730The Midwest Winter Sale 2008 on 02/08/2008$1,150.00
1894 Morgan dollar, ICG VF-30
A bit lighter grey on the obverse than the reverse, which is ash grey. Slightly baggier than usual for the grade.
731The Midwest Winter Sale 2008 on 02/08/2008$575.00
1894 Morgan dollars, ANACS VF-30, scratched, whizzed
Excessively bright from application of a wire brush, but strongly detailed for the grade. A nearly vertical scratch extends downward behind Liberty's eye.
732The Midwest Winter Sale 2008 on 02/08/2008$1,350.00
1894 Morgan dollar EF-45, cleaned.
It is debatable as to whether a coin with fifteen points of wear could retain somewhat bright surfaces without assistance, but this coin displays no obvious signs of cleaning. Only a slightly glossy...
733The Midwest Winter Sale 2008 on 02/08/2008$2,700.00
1894 Morgan dollar, NGC MS-60
Your cataloger confesses to some difficulty in deciding why NGC assigned such a seemingly conservative grade to this very tough date. The basically clean cheek and shimmering luster would seem to be...
734The Midwest Winter Sale 2008 on 02/08/2008$3,000.00
1894 Morgan dollar, NGC MS-62
Boldly struck for an issue that is sometimes a bit soft. Luster beams readily off both sides, but there are just a few too many bagmarks to allow for a fully "choice" grade. One moderate bagmark in...
735The Midwest Winter Sale 2008 on 02/08/2008$7,000.00
1894 Morgan dollar, PCGS MS-64
Off-white patina lightly shades this semi-key issue, and the luster is excellent, but the grade may be determined to some extent by a rather modest strike. Some thin luster grazes vaguely affect the...
838The Collectors' Auction 2007 on 10/19/2007$1,200.00
1894 PCGS VF-30.
This highly desirable Philadelphia date ranks second for having the lowest recorded number of business strikes, the renowned 1893-S being first. A couple of contact marks are noted on this...
839The Collectors' Auction 2007 on 10/19/2007$900.00
1894 VF-35.
Morgan dollar collectors who admire and appreciate ultra-original coins will immediately recognize the rare opportunity afforded here: an uncleaned, dirty, grungy, grimy key date dollar that has never...
840The Collectors' Auction 2007 on 10/19/2007$1,350.00
1894 AU-50 Details, Dipped.
Although each face is overly “glittery,” this is not an unattractive coin. Considerable luster revolves readily around each side, and the detail is suggestive of right at About Uncirculated details. ...
841The Collectors' Auction 2007 on 10/19/2007$1,950.00
1894 NGC AU-58.
Shows the barest trace of friction on Liberty's cheek and the hair above her ear. A highly lustrous example with delightful golden highlights. Delicate scuffs are perceived in the fields, and the...
842The Collectors' Auction 2007 on 10/19/2007$2,100.00
1894 NGC AU-58.
Impulsive examination of this white, lustrous coin could result in a passing assessment of Mint State, but NGC correctly recognized the rub on Liberty’s cheek and slight separation of the luster in...
843The Collectors' Auction 2007 on 10/19/2007$3,100.00
1894 NGC MS-62.
The incorporation of a good strike, unabraded surfaces, and gleaming mint luster should typically result in a grade assessment of at least MS-63, and even though this coin combines all three factors...

1894 NGC XF-45.
This lot represents a highly desirable Philadelphia Mint dollar with an extremely low mintage for a regular mint issue. It manifests a glistening silver appearance, even though its attributed at a...
