Lot Title:
1836 AU/questionable color.
Description:
Although very little actual wear is apparent, slight rub can be seen on the usual hair curls above the ear, at the lower curls right of the clasp, and certainly on the eagle's beak and brow. However, the speckled, crackled toning, which does not seem entirely natural, significantly subdues any contrast in texture between worn and unworn areas, making this appear to be an uncirculated piece at first glance. Further investigation reveals that the surfaces beneath the toning are overly bright and reflective, and some effort may have been involved in attenuating this effect. Finally, and most important of all, there is a number of individually minor, but collectively significant scratches that are only seen with a glass, as they are effectively covered up by the tone. The most prominent example is partially hidden in the eagle's left (observed) wing. While it may seem from the preceding description that your cataloger has nothing nice to say about this coveted reeded-edge bust half, such is not the case at all. On balance, this is a surprisingly attractive coin despite the caveats, with an arm's length appearance that really is suggestive of a marvelous, high-grade coin. It is very likely that this auction lot will easily surpass the estimated value.
This lot may contain an item not certified by ANACS, PCGS, or NGC. While Scotsman Auction Co. is typically conservative in our descriptions of items not certified by one of these companies, we cannot guarantee our grading estimation will match their grade. We highly recommend that collectors seeking items certified by a third-party grading service only bid on items that have already been certified. No lot can be returned because of a variance in judgment with regards to grade.
