Lot Title: 1799 B-5, BB-157, R-2. PCGS VF-35.
Description: This later die state is characterized by a die break on the reverse that runs through United States. It depicts a handsome, pale silver-gray heirloom bearing. A graffitilike letter "I" appears in the field across fro Liberty's chin. Some scattered marks commensurate with this grade are also observed, but they are not unusual for these early Bust Silver Dollars. It is a well centered and prominently struck 18th-century type specimen.

757The Collectors' Auction - 2014 on 10/17/2014$425.00
1799 NGC AG-3.
Courteous Collection of Early Type. At this grade level, eye-appeal for a bust dollar is best derived from surface quality, and in this case, both sides yield original character in spades. Nice! ...
758The Collectors' Auction - 2014 on 10/17/2014$500.00
1799 F details, bent.
Courteous Collection of Early Type. "Bent" refers to a tiny, sharp punch that has been made directly into Liberty's eye, giving her a rather grotesque expression as a result. A tiny bulge can be seen...
759The Collectors' Auction - 2014 on 10/17/2014$1,100.00
1799 (B-7, BB-156, R.4) NGC VF details/improperly cleaned.
Courteous Collection of Early Type. The surfaces, especially on the reverse, do seem a bit dull from cleaning, but effects are not entirely drastic overall for this dove-grey dollar. Tiny...
720The Midwest Summer Sale 2014 on 07/18/2014$2,450.00
1799 (B-17, BB-164) NGC AU details/improperly cleaned.
NGC's noted "cleaning" probably falls within the parameters of the "mild" level, as neither side displays excessive hairlines from any viewing angle and only modestly glossy texture. While the...
721The Midwest Summer Sale 2014 on 07/18/2014$9,000.00
1799 (B-12, BB-160, R.3) NGC AU-58.
Some observers may well wonder why the obverse doesn't display much "cartwheeling" while the reverse does indeed show much flowline luster. The reason is simply that the obverse die was basically...
774The Collectors' Auction 2013 on 10/18/2013$1,250.00
Two 1799, NGC VF details/reverse damage/cleaned, and F...
New World Estate. Attributions are not given by NGC but are supplied here for these relatively common die-marriages. First is 1799 B-17, BB-164 (NGC F/cleaned), and while a bit oddly textured due to...
775The Collectors' Auction 2013 on 10/18/2013$725.00
1799 (B-5, BB-157) NGC F details/repaired.
Marshmallow Collection. Glossy with very smooth surfaces that have been retoned with an unknown dark substance. It is possible some old scratches were smoothed out of the obverse fields.
776The Collectors' Auction 2013 on 10/18/2013$775.00
1799 (B-5, BB-157) NGC VF details/repaired/plugged.
Marshmallow Collection. NGC disclaims "repaired", but the obverse may actually show a small plug at "R", with tooling in the corresponding area that helps conceal evidence. The rest of the coin,...
777The Collectors' Auction 2013 on 10/18/2013$875.00
1799 (B-5, BB-157) PCGS VF details/repaired.
New World Estate. The elusive repair can be difficult to find, but turns out to be a moderate ding beneath Liberty's chin that has been carefully tooled and smoothed over, almost to convincing...
778The Collectors' Auction 2013 on 10/18/2013$2,000.00
1799 (B-7, BB-156) NGC XF details/reverse scratched.
Marshmallow Collection. The "scratch" referenced by NGC is almost too difficult to locate, and therefore could practically be ignored for a bust dollar of this grade caliber. Look carefully along the...
779The Collectors' Auction 2013 on 10/18/2013$2,500.00
1799 (B-17, BB-164) NGC XF details/improperly cleaned.
Marshmallow Collection. Details on the reverse show very boldly for just XF, and a generous portion of cartwheel action suggests AU, though one cannot deny that cleaning has subdued the luster just a...
621The Collectors' Auction 2012 on 10/05/2012$2,600.00
1799 (B-12) ANACS XF-40.
Fields offer a slight hint of glossy texture, soothed by delicate splashes of golden toning, helping allay any chance of excessive cleaning. Still, flatness of detail over the face and bust tend to...
632The Midwest Summer Sale 2012 on 07/27/2012$3,200.00
1799 (B-5) PCGS VF-35.
An incredible coin from the standpoint of original quality, both sides of this classic type silver dollar exhibit pearl-grey devices that accomplish lovely contrast with bisque surfaces. It is no...
633The Midwest Summer Sale 2012 on 07/27/2012$2,400.00
1799 (B-9) ANACS XF-40.
Pleasing contrast prospers from surfaces that display a majority of dove-grey patina, adorned by ebony-grey toning through the stars and other peripheral devices. Lighter alabaster tone rubs...
634The Midwest Summer Sale 2012 on 07/27/2012$3,000.00
1799 (B-9) ANACS XF-45.
Heavy gunmetal-grey patina dominates every visual aspect, contributing to a "flat" appearance overall. Fortunately, much sharpness remains, with the coin having circulated just lightly and honestly,...
635The Midwest Summer Sale 2012 on 07/27/2012$2,400.00
1799 (B-12) ANACS XF-40.
Slight reflectivity in the fields has been soothed by splashes of golden toning, which helps alleviate some fears of excessive cleaning. Still, the coin would look better in the VF grade range, as...
636The Midwest Summer Sale 2012 on 07/27/2012$2,200.00
1799 (B-18, BB-163) NGC VF-30.
Delightful lavender-grey dominates the fields and contrasts well with salmon-beige highlights, the two-toned presentation being about as nice as it gets for VF-30. While modestly worn, that nice...
742The Collectors' Auction 2011 on 10/21/2011$2,500.00
1799 (B-17, BB-164) NGC VF-30.
The fields are distinctly tinted in deep navy-blue patina that shows off some pea-green accents around the stars when the light is tilted just so. This is a rather appealing quality, especially given...
777The Midwest Summer Sale 2011 on 07/29/2011$750.00
1799 (B-11) VG/late die state.
No berries appear on the reverse, and while this is not a recognized PUP for attribution, that fact, along with an intricate network of cracks at "D" in UNITED instantly narrows the choice down to a...
569The Collectors' Auction 2010 on 10/15/2010$1,150.00
1799 "Irregular Date, 15 Stars" (B-4, BB-153, R.4). PCGS VG-10.
Collectors who appreciate the trials and tribulations of the early mint have always appreciated the charming "fifteen stars reverse" for 1799 B-4, which refers to an extra star on both the left and...
570The Collectors' Auction 2010 on 10/15/2010$1,500.00
1799 "Close 17 Obverse" (B-16, BB-158, R.2). VF/light cleaning.
Glossy texture in the fields indicates a past light cleaning, though passage of time has allowed the surfaces to reacquire some semblance of patina. Thus, the coin is not overly bright and could very...
669The Midwest Summer Sale 2010 on 07/23/2010$1,075.00
1799 "No Berries" Reverse (B-12, BB-160, R.2) ANACS VG-10.
Lacking berries, the right branch seems strangely barren for the popular B-12 die marriage, and certainly makes attribution quick and easy (though it is not shown on the slab). ANACS has provided a...
670The Midwest Summer Sale 2010 on 07/23/2010$2,000.00
1799 "Apostrophe" variety, Large Berries (B-9, BB-166, R.1). XF/light...
A shattered obverse die is by far the most dramatic characteristic of B-8, and the associated die cracks in the obverse upper right field are obvious. A touch of luster may still be seen in the...
537The Midwest Winter Sale on 02/12/2010$1,450.00
1799 Close 17 Obverse (B-16, BB-158, R.2). VF/light cleaning.
Lightly cleaned at some time in the past, surfaces nonetheless are not overly bright, and this would not be a bad selection for type representation on a budget. Details remain bold in the face of...
482The Collectors' Auction 2009 on 10/16/2009$4,500.00
1799 (BB-158, B-16B) ICG AU-50.
B-16b is popular because in this late die-state (IV), the obverse die is practically shattered, displaying a number of spidery cracks that have sprung up like English ivy all around Liberty's portrait...
829The Midwest Summer Sale on 07/24/2009$1,200.00
1799 (B-10, BB-163, R.2) PCGS Genuine.
Other Damage as denoted by the PCGS "98" code presumably is in reference to a prominent corrosion spot on the eagle's right (observed) wing, though on balance, this is a very attractive and original...
830The Midwest Summer Sale on 07/24/2009$1,950.00
1799 (B-14, BB-167, R.3). NGC VF-25.
Flint-grey fields are complemented by peach-bronze accents, particularly over Liberty's portrait. The tear shaped die defects that quickly identify B-14 (BB-167) are easily visible on this specimen,...
831The Midwest Summer Sale on 07/24/2009$2,700.00
1799 Normal Date (B-9, BB-166, R-2). NGC VF-35.
(Ex. Heritage 1/4/2007: 5015) As described in the Heritage Reiver sale catalog, "This is one of the most common die varieties for 1799; however, it was struck from a scarce state of the dies", with...
709The Midwest Winter Sale 2009 on 02/13/2009$4,250.00
1799 7 & 6 Stars, "Apostrophe" Variety, Large Berries (B-9, BB-166,...
Highly attractive original surface quality allows plenty of luster to beckon through the tasteful pastel-lilac patina, which escalates in depth and grace beyond the edge devices. Practically all of...
546The Collectors' Auction 2008 on 10/17/2008$2,100.00
1799 (B-14, BB-167, R.3) Draped Bust dollar, NGC VF-25.
Peach-bronze accents overlay a predominantly flint-grey patina. The tear shaped die defects that quickly identify B-14 (BB-167) are easily visible on this specimen, and it is boldly detailed otherwise...
547The Collectors' Auction 2008 on 10/17/2008$1,750.00
1799 (B-17, BB-164, R.2) Draped Bust silver dollar, VF.
Beneath the second star from the left is a pair of die lines that resemble a tilted equal sign, leading to rapid attribution of B-17 (BB-164). This is an excellent, original coin with a slightly...
615The Midwest Winter Sale 2008 on 02/08/2008$675.00
1799 (B-9) Draped Bust dollar, ANACS G-4
A G-6 obverse is mated to an AG-3 reverse, yielding the correct overall net grade of G-4. Liberty's portrait on the obverse is bold, but on the reverse, the eagle's head and inner right (observed)...
616The Midwest Winter Sale 2008 on 02/08/2008$625.00
1799 (B-15a, BB-152, R.4) Draped Bust dollar, F-12, cleaned
This specimen is a representative of the late die state from this interesting and important obverse and reverse die combination. It is easily identifiable by the number of significant die breaks on...
617The Midwest Winter Sale 2008 on 02/08/2008$825.00
1799 (B-5 R.4) Draped Bust dollar, VF-20, plugged
Extraordinary care was taken to plug a small hole at 12:00 of the obverse (6:00 reverse). The repair is virtually undetectable, and is apparent only by careful examination of the tooling in the area....
618The Midwest Winter Sale 2008 on 02/08/2008$2,200.00
1799 (B-12b) Draped Bust dollar, VF-30
A very advanced state of die deterioration has resulted in large, ominous obverse die cracks that have brought that die to the brink of shattering fully. The lengthy cud on the left obverse edge (not...
665The Collectors' Auction 2007 on 10/19/2007$625.00
1799 B-23 R4 “8x5” F-12 Details, Plugged, Whizzed.
Considerable skill was employed to repair a hole at “E” of "LIBERTY." That letter, and the corresponding Eagle feathers on the reverse, were then re-engraved. As if that were not enough, the...
666The Collectors' Auction 2007 on 10/19/2007$925.00
1799 B-11 ANACS F-15 Details, Repaired-Whizzed.
Graffiti has been removed from the obverse fields, and the entire coin has been rather harshly smoothed and recolored to make the appearance seemingly more consistent. Previously holdered by PCI in a...
649The Midwest Summer Sale 2007 on 07/27/2007$1,800.00
1799 B-8, BB-165, R-3. PCGS VF-25.
This scarce variety has a marvelous silver aspect. It is easily identified by die blemishes at the last "S" of "STATES" and by a "dash" at the base between the "N" and "I" of "UNITED" on the reverse....
650The Midwest Summer Sale 2007 on 07/27/2007$1,650.00
1799 B-17, BB-164, Die State III, R-2. VF-30.
A specimen that falls within the designation of "normal date" for this particular year. Because this die was subjected to repeated polishing and smoothing processes, its stars are distinctly tapered....
694The Midwest Winter Sale 2007 on 02/09/2007$2,200.00
1799 B-14, BB-167, R-3. ANACS XF-40.
This variety's uniform pewter surfaces are embellished with a deep magenta hue giving it an austere character. Scrutinizing the surfaces with a glass gives no indication of any obtrusive marks or...
502The Collector's Auction on 10/20/2006$825.00
1799 B-10, BB-163, R-2. PCGS VG-8.
This specimen's appealing pewter surfaces are enhanced with a delicate rose nuance. It is a handsome lower grade Heraldic Eagle Dollar that shows no major marks or blemishes.
503The Collector's Auction on 10/20/2006$875.00
1799 B-5, BB-157, R-2. F-15.
Comparatively, this is a run-of-the-mill variety for this popular design type. Its perceived detailing is more closely related to that of a piece assigned a condition level of VF-25. Diagnostic is...
504The Collector's Auction on 10/20/2006$1,950.00
1799 B-17, BB-164, R-2. VF-30.
This specimen's light gray surfaces are awashed with a hint of lavender. Devoid of detracting marks, blemishes, or rim bruises, and this issue exhibits prominent detailing on the drapery and shield.
721The Midwest Summer Sale 2006 on 07/21/2006$975.00
1799 B-16, BB-158, R-2. F-15.
This relatively common variety depicts handsome, light pewter surfaces accented by a delicate lilac blush. There are no major detractions to note, just the normally encountered surface marks and...
722The Midwest Summer Sale 2006 on 07/21/2006$900.00
1799 B-14, BB 167, R-3. ANACS VF-20.
The ANACS label states this piece is REPAIRED. This repair is probably in the fields as they appear to have had some scratches "smoothed out" by a buffing wheel. The surfaces have a light...
723The Midwest Summer Sale 2006 on 07/21/2006$2,000.00
1799 B-9, BB-166, R-1 PCGS VF-25.
This "Apostrophe" variety -- seen after the final "S" in STATES -- is the most common variety from this year. It displays original, rich pewter-gray toning that totally adorns this Robert Scott...

1799 B-11, BB-161, R-3 VF-30.
This is an example of the "No Berries" reverse. The surfaces are a light pewter-gray with a couple minor rim bruises noticed. An interesting concentric that appears as a die crack along certain...
726The Midwest Summer Sale 2006 on 07/21/2006$2,400.00
1799 XF-45.
A super XF coin with smooth, original wear and no damage. It has a violet patina that really sets it off. All of the detail is there, with none of the artificial flavors.
727The Midwest Summer Sale 2006 on 07/21/2006$3,000.00
1799 B-7, BB-156, R-4 NGC XF-45.
The uniform light gray surfaces are augmented with enhancing russet hues. Quite choice for this grade level. A few minuscule ticks are noticed if viewed with a strong glass on this impressive...
654The Midwest Winter Sale on 02/17/2006$1,265.00
1799 B-21, BB-169, Rarity-2+. F-15.
Pleasing pewter-gray surfaces accent this example that shows strong detail for the grade. A couple insignificant ticks and rim bumps are indicated for accuracy purposes. There's a die crack on the...
655The Midwest Winter Sale on 02/17/2006$1,200.00
1799 B-22, BB-168, Rarity-3, F-15.
A variety that is immediately recognizable by its reverse, which has a die break that extends horizontally across its entire reverse and dividing it into upper and lower halves. Technically a VF-20...
656The Midwest Winter Sale on 02/17/2006$0.00
1799 B-5, BB-157, R-2 F-15.
This relatively common variety for the series shows a fine die crack running from the Eagle's tail through the entire UNITED STATES. It has the appearance of a piece in the grade level of VF-25, but...
