1902 Blue Seal Hawley, MN PMG VF. 1902 Blue Seal Hawley, MN PMG VF.
Lot Title: 1902 Blue Seal Hawley, MN PMG VF.
Description: Charter# 7772. The First National Bank of Hawley, Minnesota. This note was previous offered in our July 2004 Gateway City Sale. Here is how it was described: A sensational discovery that will finally allow at least a single collector to own a large size note from the small, one bank town of Hawley, Minnesota. Snuggled just inside the Minnesota border that separates the state from North Dakota, towards the middle of that vertical border, is the small community of Hawley, where fewer than 2000 residents reside. In that town, like so may others of similar size across the Country, is a neighborhood bank that the populace turns to for help with loans, investments, and savings. For 100 years in Hawley, that role has been filled by The First National Bank of Hawley, Minnesota. The bank first opened its doors in 1905 thanks to the work done by five gentlemen: H.F. Mensing, Andrew Jackson, Herbert Glaisyer, Hans Tushfeldt, and F.H. Welcome. These men, who were the first members of the Board of Directors, were responsible for the organization and chartering of the bank. When the bank was launched and the open sign was first hung on the front door of the building on the east side of 6th Street in downtown Hawley, F.H. Welcome began his reign as the bank's first president. G.O. Sjordahl and D.G. Johnson, the bank's first two cashiers, assisted Mr. Welcome with the day-to-day operations of the bank. The bank was assigned charter number 7772 and soon after issued large size National Bank Notes. Up until recently, no large size examples from the bank were reported to still exist. But in late April 2004, this single $5 example surfaced, making at least a few collectors' dreams come true. The signatures of G.O. Sjordahl and H.F. Mensing are hand signed and are clear and distinct. It is unlikely another example will be available on the market anytime soon, possibly ever. If you collect Minnesota Nationals, or National rarities, this note is an absolute must and deserves your most aggressive bid.

This lot may contain an item not certified by ANACS, PCGS, or NGC. While Scotsman Auction Co. is typically conservative in our descriptions of items not certified by one of these companies, we cannot guarantee our grading estimation will match their grade. We highly recommend that collectors seeking items certified by a third-party grading service only bid on items that have already been certified. No lot can be returned because of a variance in judgment with regards to grade.
