(About The Images)
1911-D AU-58. 1911-D AU-58.
Lot Title: 1911-D AU-58.
Description: The scarcest date within this popular series, it has a very low mintage of only 55,680. This particular specimen is sharply struck and has the strong "D" mintmark on the reverse. Although it may have experienced a light cleaning, the color is a rich yellow-gold, and there are no detracting marks or blemishes to note.

This lot may contain an item not certified by ANACS, PCGS, or NGC. While Scotsman Auction Co. is typically conservative in our descriptions of items not certified by one of these companies, we cannot guarantee our grading estimation will match their grade. We highly recommend that collectors seeking items certified by a third-party grading service only bid on items that have already been certified. No lot can be returned because of a variance in judgment with regards to grade.

1012The Collectors' Auction - 2014 on 10/17/2014$7,250.00
1911-D NGC MS-62.
Young Bonnie Lass Collection. Flawless eye-appeal (for MS-62) begins with nicely saturated butternut-gold patina that seems to be original in every way, with shimmering sky-blue highlights noticeable...
933The Midwest Summer Sale 2014 on 07/18/2014$2,300.00
1911-D ANACS XF-45/cleaned.
Perhaps briefly polished, which has resulted in unnatural glossy sheen on the high relief areas. As ANACS suggests with an "AU details" assessment, formidable detail remains, having been affected...
934The Midwest Summer Sale 2014 on 07/18/2014$2,700.00
1911-D NGC AU details/improperly cleaned.
Really, the details meet or exceed the AU-55 level, with virtually zero wear on the reverse and just a faint touch of friction and a pair of tiny contact marks on the Indian's cheek. Surfaces exhibit...
935The Midwest Summer Sale 2014 on 07/18/2014$4,500.00
1911-D NGC AU-58.
Falling a little on the softer side of the spectrum for mintmarks on the 1911-D, the coin nonetheless provides very fair sharpness overall, aside from a brief touch of wear. Delightful almond-gold...
936The Midwest Summer Sale 2014 on 07/18/2014$4,400.00
1911-D NGC AU-58.
Chantilly Lace Collection. Ever popular in AU-58, the astute buyer knows he is saving a lot of money over a "true" UNC, at no real loss of definition or eye-appeal from MS-62. Definite color shift...
1064The Collectors' Auction 2013 on 10/18/2013$2,800.00
1911-D NGC AU details/improperly cleaned.
New World Estate. New to the population report, this was submitted with expectation of a straight XF grade, but NGC has settled instead upon AU/cleaned. Truth be told, any alleged cleaning cannot be...
1065The Collectors' Auction 2013 on 10/18/2013$5,250.00
1911-D PCGS AU-58.
New World Estate. Not only is the mintmark bold as can be, but the entire coin displays an unusually precise strike for 1911-D, with the fin on the extreme right side well raised up above the field. ...
1066The Collectors' Auction 2013 on 10/18/2013$12,500.00
1911-D (strong D) NGC MS-63.
An exquisite example of the eternal key to the series, NGC's MS-63 grade adequately reflects tight, matte luster and surfaces that reveal very, very little by way of contact marks. Indeed, a tiny...
1104The Midwest Summer Sale on 07/26/2013$2,700.00
1911-D strong D, PCGS Genuine, AU details/cleaning.
No doubt about this one, as the "D" cannot be missed despite this die-state already showing mild degradation of the mintmark. PCGS mentions "cleaning" but the effects are scarcely noticeable, and...
1105The Midwest Summer Sale on 07/26/2013$2,600.00
1911-D AU details/cleaned.
The original NNC holder in which this coin was slabbed offered a grade of MS-64, but the consignor requested that the coin be cracked out and professionally conserved, as he had experienced...
905The Collectors' Auction 2012 on 10/05/2012$9,000.00
1911-D PCGS MS-62.
Exquisite matte texture rides over the entire coin, embracing both sides with the subtle, dull-yet-dynamic luster that many specialists enjoy. Technical factors that prevent a fully "choice" grade...
831The Midwest Summer Sale 2012 on 07/27/2012$4,700.00
1911-D PCGS AU-50 (rattler).
The grade is spot-on perfect, although by today's standards, the coin is conservatively assessed. Nice and surprisingly lustrous for the basic AU level.
832The Midwest Summer Sale 2012 on 07/27/2012$4,000.00
1911-D Strong D PCGS AU-55.
Golden brilliance can readily compete with that usually seen on mint-state coins, making this a highly suitable choice for a quarter-eagle set even at the UNC level. As specifically called out on the...
833The Midwest Summer Sale 2012 on 07/27/2012$5,700.00
1911-D strong D. PCGS AU-58.
Apparently, the differential between AU-58 and MS-62 continues to diminish, as this key quarter-eagle in the former grade looks exactly like any other example in the latter grade. Excellent luster...
834The Midwest Summer Sale 2012 on 07/27/2012$5,500.00
1911-D PCGS AU-58.
Delicate rub on the Indian's cheek accompanies barely detectable discoloration on the eagle's shoulder and confirms the grade. Nonetheless, all the luster and eye-appeal of a "choice BU" remain! The...
835The Midwest Summer Sale 2012 on 07/27/2012$5,500.00
1911-D PCGS AU-58.
Quite possibly van "UNC" example with trivial rub from mishandling, this key quarter-eagle looks exactly like many graded MS-61 or MS-62. Surfaces glitter with strong matte luster and show none but...
836The Midwest Summer Sale 2012 on 07/27/2012$3,900.00
1911-D NGC UNC details/improperly cleaned.
The "D" mintmark is strong. NGC ascribes details to the UNC level, but truth be told, there appears to be slight wear on the upper design points. Of more importance, though, each side has been...
837The Midwest Summer Sale 2012 on 07/27/2012$7,500.00
1911-D PCGS MS-61.
This is about as strong as the mintmark will ever be for 1911-D - or for any Denver quarter-eagle for that matter. It is SHARP! For that matter, the entire coin is very well struck, and sculpting of...
411The Collectors' Auction 2011 on 10/21/2011$4,700.00
1911-D PCGS AU-55.
PCGS will sometimes designate "strong D" on the slab of a key 1911-D quarter-eagle (see elsewhere in today's sale), given that the statement is true, and one can only wonder why it wasn't so...
412The Collectors' Auction 2011 on 10/21/2011$17,750.00
1911-D (strong D) PCGS MS-62.
PCGS has indicated "Strong D" right on the insert label, and there is no question whatsoever that the statement is true. This quarter-eagle has one of the boldest mintmarks ever seen for the key,...
1042The Midwest Summer Sale 2011 on 07/29/2011$7,400.00
1911-D NGC MS-61.
No magnification at all is required to see the all-important Denver mintmark, and as always, the knifelike upper obverse rim confirms authenticity. Due to responsible ownership, the surfaces have not...
1043The Midwest Summer Sale 2011 on 07/29/2011$6,850.00
1911-D NGC MS-61.
1909-S VDB, 1885, 1916-D, 1932-D, 1921-S, 1889-CC, 1893-S... the list of key dates that are recognizable without even mentioning a coin's denomination is lengthy and varied. For Indian gold, 1911-D...
809The Collectors' Auction 2010 on 10/15/2010$3,900.00
1911-D XF.
The "D" mintmark is not fully brought up, but it is definitely visible without a loupe, and the diagnostic knifelike rim is obvious at the obverse upper-right. Light wear is noted on this key, mildly...
810The Collectors' Auction 2010 on 10/15/2010$2,900.00
1911-D NCS AU Details/improperly cleaned.
Straw-gold surfaces are very pale compared to what would be considered "original", and conclusion that the coin has been cleaned is verified by the NCS disclaimer. What is important, of course, is...
988The Midwest Summer Sale 2010 on 07/23/2010$3,600.00
1911-D AU details/lightly cleaned.
The opportunity to view a genuine 1911-D obliges appreciation of the famous knife rim on the edge opposite the mintmark that makes attribution easy. In this case, it is also unnecessary since the...
989The Midwest Summer Sale 2010 on 07/23/2010$3,900.00
1911-D AU counting wheel damage.
The advantage of viewing a 1911-D not in a slab is that one may appreciate the diagnostic knifelike rim that allows attribution of a genuine example. Obligingly, the all-important "D" mintmark on the...
990The Midwest Summer Sale 2010 on 07/23/2010$3,800.00
1911-D, Strong D, PCGS AU-53.
The all-important "D" mintmark is plain as day, leaving no doubt as to proper attribution of this, the key to the Indian quarter-eagles. Just as important is this coin's grade, which seems to be at...
991The Midwest Summer Sale 2010 on 07/23/2010$15,500.00
1911-D Strong D PCGS MS-63.
So prominent are the strike and mintmark for this 1911-D -- an issue notorious for weak mintmarks -- that PCGS felt compelled to call it out with a "Strong D" disclaimer right on the slab. This is...
746The Midwest Winter Sale on 02/12/2010$2,600.00
1911-D Strong D PCGS Genuine.
Mildly cleaned and lacking any aggressive hairlines, it is a little surprising PCGS did not elect to provide a grade since the appearance is not offensive in the slightest. Your fearless cataloger...
753The Collectors' Auction 2009 on 10/16/2009$3,250.00
1911-D PCGS XF-45.
Hardly any detail has succumbed to wear, with the only significant evidence of circulation being some slight flattening of the finest feather design in the war bonnet. While not absolutely full, the...
1101The Midwest Summer Sale on 07/24/2009$4,100.00
1911-D NGC AU-58.
The all important "D" mintmark is boldly struck on the reverse, making attribution by the obverse partial wire rim unnecessary, though that pickup point is visible despite encapsulation. Collectors...
879The Midwest Winter Sale 2009 on 02/13/2009$3,050.00
1911-D ANACS AU-58 details/cleaned..
A warm apricot-gold glow accents this issue's bold design definition. At first glance, this much sought after date is quite appealing, unfortunately, however, the reverse lacks its original mint...
880The Midwest Winter Sale 2009 on 02/13/2009$14,750.00
1911-D PCGS MS-63.
An absolutely ravishing and unquestionably choice representative of the undisputed key to the Indian quarter-eagle series, this coin provides a bold strike and a mintmark that is easily visible...
933The Collectors' Auction 2008 on 10/17/2008$2,700.00
1911-D AU, reverse scratch.
The ANA authentication photo certificate that accompanies this lot mentions the staple scratch that protrudes from the eagle's back, and this is most unfortunate, as a grade of at least AU-50 would...
934The Collectors' Auction 2008 on 10/17/2008$3,800.00
1911-D PCGS AU-53.
Only two pairs of dies were used to strike this key issue, with one of those pairs being used to strike a commanding majority of coins. Any connoisseur of the series knows that because of the overused...
935The Collectors' Auction 2008 on 10/17/2008$6,000.00
1911-D PCGS AU-58.
No other coin in the series even remotely contends with the 1911-D for status as the key. This example retains full mint luster, and it is just the color shift from classic gold to honey-brown on the...
936The Collectors' Auction 2008 on 10/17/2008$18,500.00
1911-D PCGS MS-63.
In grades of MS-63 and below, 1911-D is really the only key in the Indian quarter-eagle series. Thus, it has long been a target of investors, as well as collectors, while the small mintage of only 55,...
862The Midwest Winter Sale 2008 on 02/08/2008$3,700.00
1911-D Indian quarter-eagle, PCGS AU-53
Examples with a weak (or non-existent, in some cases) mintmark sensibly garner less attention than those that, like the present coin, exhibit a good, plainly visible "D" left of the arrowheads. As...
863The Midwest Winter Sale 2008 on 02/08/2008$4,900.00
1911-D (strong D) Indian quarter-eagle, AU-55, cleaned, reverse tooled
Most any aficionado of the series immediately checks the mintmark of any 1911-D to gauge it's prominence, and in this case, that collector will be pleased to note that a nice, strong "D" marks boldly...
864The Midwest Winter Sale 2008 on 02/08/2008$5,000.00
1911-D Indian quarter-eagle, NGC AU-58
FEATURED ITEM: To your cataloger's eye, this coin displays no actual wear. Those highpoint areas that are normally the first to see rub - the Indian's cheekbone and the eagle's exposed shoulder -...
865The Midwest Winter Sale 2008 on 02/08/2008$1,850.00
1911-D Indian quarter-eagle, ANACS AU-58 details, cleaned
The all-important mintmark is unmistakable, yet as is often the case for this issue, it is weak and just barely visible without a glass. At normal viewing distance, this is actually a reasonably...
972The Collectors' Auction 2007 on 10/19/2007$4,750.00
1911-D MS-60 Details, Cleaned.
The mintmark is easily viewed, and as is often the case, a knifelike edge is visible along much of the right obverse edge. The cleaning is very mild, and there is no apparent reason as to why someone...
966The Midwest Summer Sale 2007 on 07/27/2007$2,600.00
1911-D AU-50 Details, Scratched.
The key date to this series, and a coin popular in just about every grade. Its surfaces diffuse a lovely yellow-gold aspect with trace luster remaining. Slight scrapes above the Eagle's tail...
969The Midwest Summer Sale 2007 on 07/27/2007$5,000.00
1911-D NGC AU-58.
This key-date issue radiates an opulent yellow-gold aspect from its tantalizing mattelike surfaces. Just the barest trace of wear is detected along with a few trivial contact marks. The mintmark is...
970The Midwest Summer Sale 2007 on 07/27/2007$11,500.00
1911-D NGC MS-62.
A splendid example of this key date to the Indian Head quarter-eagle series (really, the ONLY key date). The wire rim above "LIBERTY" is diagnostic of the issue, and confirms authenticity. ...
971The Midwest Summer Sale 2007 on 07/27/2007$55,000.00
1911-D NGC MS-65.
The bidder is presented here with a crucial opportunity to acquire one of the most extraordinary examples known of this rare date. The 1911-D is the undisputed key to the Indian Head Quarter Eagle...
940The Midwest Winter Sale 2007 on 02/09/2007$19,250.00
1911-D PCGS MS-63.
With a mere 55,680 pieces produced in 1911 by the Denver Mint, this date is scarce in all grades. An exquisite orange-gold glow is perceived on its satinlike surfaces. The mintmark is strong and...
316The Collector's Auction on 10/20/2006$6,000.00
1911-D ANACS AU-58 Details Cleaned.
With only 55,680 of these pieces struck by the Denver Mint, this date is highly desired in all grades. Although its denoted as being cleaned, a warm orange-gold glow give this specimen a handsome...
317The Collector's Auction on 10/20/2006$13,250.00
1911-D PCGS MS-62.
This stimulating key date specimen has enticing satinlike surfaces with a rich yellow-gold aspect. The few meager contact ticks that are observed do not detract from its highly visual appeal. Boldly...
392The Midwest Summer Sale 2006 on 07/21/2006$6,625.00
1911-D NGC AU-58.
Only 55,680 specimens were struck by the Denver Branch Mint in 1911, and this particular piece represents the most elusive date to locate in upper grade levels. Scarce in any grade, this variety --...
393The Midwest Summer Sale 2006 on 07/21/2006$5,750.00
1911-D MS-60+.
This is the key date and one that shows very well. The mintmark is well formed and present. Overall appealing with lovely color, full strike, and only a few light marks. Very nice and always in...
394The Midwest Summer Sale 2006 on 07/21/2006$9,500.00
1911-D NGC MS-61.
This, of coarse, is the key date. The example now offered is well struck with a light gold coloration. The surfaces are free of all but the tiniest of marks, and if the coin had better luster it...
395The Midwest Summer Sale 2006 on 07/21/2006$9,500.00
1911-D NGC MS-61.
This is a very high eye appeal coin that also happens to be the key date. Very well stamped and virtually devoid of mars, this piece appears undergraded. The surfaces are very delicate looking with...
396The Midwest Summer Sale 2006 on 07/21/2006$10,500.00
1911-D PCGS MS-61.
This PCGS holdered key date has much better luster than one would expect in an MS-61 holder. The coin is bright and flashy with only a few trivial contact marks noted. The impression is full with a...
1031The Midwest Winter Sale on 02/17/2006$4,750.00
1911-D NGC AU-58.
One of the nicer AU coins you are likely to see. It is hard to find signs of circulation on this coin, but nevertheless, that was the verdict given by NGC. The "D" mintmark is clearly visible, but...
1032The Midwest Winter Sale on 02/17/2006$4,500.00
1911-D ICG AU-58.
This is a bright and beautiful gold coin. The key date to the $2.50 series. The strike is full, with complete feather and headdress detail. This rare coin has a very light touch of rub on the...
