Lot Title:
1855-C Fine/repaired.
Description:
1855-C is notable as being both the lowest mintage of any Charlotte quarter eagle (3,677), and probably the worst produced. Further compounding this issue's rarity is a poor survival rate, particularly in lower circulated grades. The present example is not without its flaws, as there is evidence of a repair in the right field, possible a puncture or attempted puncture, and Liberty's portrait has been smoothed a little. The effects of the repair have been diminished somewhat since the coin has been cleaned overall and some patina restored. LIBERTY on the headband is bold, as is the date, but it is difficult to assess the overall strike characteristics, as might be expected. A legitimately rare coin in any grade.
This lot may contain an item not certified by ANACS, PCGS, or NGC. While Scotsman Auction Co. is typically conservative in our descriptions of items not certified by one of these companies, we cannot guarantee our grading estimation will match their grade. We highly recommend that collectors seeking items certified by a third-party grading service only bid on items that have already been certified. No lot can be returned because of a variance in judgment with regards to grade.
