Lot Title:

Complete (1908 - 1929) Indian Head quarter-eagle certified set, MS-64.
|
Description:
|
Bidders in this sale have multiple opportunities to obtain a complete collection of Indian quarter-eagles for a single bid, and the set offered in this lot is something truly spectacular. Every coin is certified as grading MS-64 by NGC (1908, 1910, 1911, 1911-D, 1914, 1915, 1925-D, 1926, 1927, and 1928) or PCGS (1909, 1912, 1913, 1914-D, and 1929), which is indicative of the effort entailed in accumulating the coins. 1911-D is, of course, THE key to the set, and that included here is a marvelous coin. Fully original, the surfaces are bathed in robust rouge-gold patina that serves to accent the highpoint details, and an intriguing crescent of vivid (for a gold coin) blue-green color sweeps around the right edge of the obverse. An exacting strike produced sharp details that are hardly disturbed by handling marks on the obverse, while the reverse is only slightly more affected by pre-existing planchet grazes discussed elsewhere in this catalog.
Needless to say, at the MS-64 grade, several issues in the series become downright difficult to acquire. Additional highlights include 1909 (incredibly attractive, finely textured matte surfaces), 1910 (fabulously original and sharply struck), 1912 (glitters with pleasing royal-gold color and very sharply struck), 1914 (gleaming pale-gold with yet another sharp strike), and 1914-D (rather creamy smooth with scattered handling marks). Indeed, all the better dates seem above average, and the 1909 offers a legitimate chance at upgrade, in your cataloger's opinion.
This lot may contain an item not certified by ANACS, PCGS, or NGC. While Scotsman Auction Co. is typically conservative in our descriptions of items not certified by one of these companies, we cannot guarantee our grading estimation will match their grade. We highly recommend that collectors seeking items certified by a third-party grading service only bid on items that have already been certified. No lot can be returned because of a variance in judgment with regards to grade.
