(About The Images)
1822 XF. 1822 XF.
Lot Title: 1822 XF.
Description: The infrequency of its appearance at auction is telling evidence of the scarcity of 1822 in grades above VF or so. With a mintage of only 64-thousand pieces, price guides still seem low even after the nice run large planchet bust quarters have experienced over the last couple of years. Steve Tompkins' brand new book on early quarters suggests that the only die state is that for "perfect" dies, and the present example confirms that analysis, with no evidence whatsoever of any die clashing. The most interesting die characteristic is the jagged scroll edge below "S" in the motto, which is seen on every genuine 1822 B-1 (a different reverse was of course used for the rare 1822 B-2 "25/50"). Substantial mint luster permeates this coin, reaching inward from the boundary of the stars and surrounding the eagle motif. The stars are flatly struck as usual, but hair details are surprising well defined, and the drapery at Liberty's bust is bold, while the clasp is extremely sharp. Hints of album coloration tinge the furthest edges of each side.

This lot may contain an item not certified by ANACS, PCGS, or NGC. While Scotsman Auction Co. is typically conservative in our descriptions of items not certified by one of these companies, we cannot guarantee our grading estimation will match their grade. We highly recommend that collectors seeking items certified by a third-party grading service only bid on items that have already been certified. No lot can be returned because of a variance in judgment with regards to grade.
