(About The Images)
1849 AU/questionable color/porous surfaces. 1849 AU/questionable color/porous surfaces.
Lot Title: 1849 AU/questionable color/porous surfaces.
Description: Considerable eye appeal has been eliminated from what was probably a nice, original coin, though at least some blame rests upon storage in an improper environment. The color is clearly not original, and some porosity is noticeable beneath an unknown residue. The fields have apparently been altered with great care in an effort to reduce the effect of some bagmarks. Highly detailed, but with a flat and unnatural appearance.

This lot may contain an item not certified by ANACS, PCGS, or NGC. While Scotsman Auction Co. is typically conservative in our descriptions of items not certified by one of these companies, we cannot guarantee our grading estimation will match their grade. We highly recommend that collectors seeking items certified by a third-party grading service only bid on items that have already been certified. No lot can be returned because of a variance in judgment with regards to grade.

575The Collectors' Auction 2010 on 10/15/2010$850.00
1849 NGC AU-53.
Reflective luster flickers from beneath a tenuous layer of almond-tan patina, contrasted by an occasional dabble of greyish tone. Three or four very old lengthy scratches cross over Liberty's upper...
683The Midwest Summer Sale 2010 on 07/23/2010$700.00
1849 NGC AU-53.
A trifle "scrubby" for the grade of AU-53, with myriad short, sharp hairlines sharing space in the fields with tiny contact marks. Although a little pale overall, a few tidbits of old dirt and grunge...
548The Midwest Winter Sale on 02/12/2010$810.00
1849 AU/cleaned.
Almond-bisque tone has settled across the surfaces and helps to downplay the hazy effects of an old cleaning. Fortunately, luster was hardly affected by the unfair treatment, as the obverse retains...
497The Collectors' Auction 2009 on 10/16/2009$475.00
1849 AU/altered surfaces.
Microgranularity texture of the surfaces suggests that this coin has been whizzed, perhaps in a foolish attempt to lessen the effect of minor handling marks on the reverse. The marks are hardly...
