Lot Title:
1854 (BG-509) dollar, PCGS MS-63.
Description:
The rare BG-509 (R.6) shares its obverse die with BG-505 through BG-508, but the stars are smaller because the die was repolished before creating the new die marriage. This in turn helped create a coin that is distinctly prooflike on the obverse, and less so on the reverse. Indeed, the depth of prooflike quality of the obverse fields might rival that of Federal proof issues of the era! This is an impeccable example, gleaming with original mottled copper-gold patina that ornaments Liberty's portrait. Charming in every way, as are most California fractional coins.
