Lot Title:

Two Sequential 1879 $10.00 Refunding Certificates. PMG VF-35.
|
Description:
|
Fr-214. Rare pair of 1879 $10 Refunding Certificates that are sequential. One was graded as having "Exceptional Paper Quality," and the other as having a "split." These certificates were issued in only the $10 denomination, and holders were initially led to believe that they would earn 4% accrued interest per annum, indefinitely. However, in 1907, Congress capped the interest, and the maximum redemption value was set at $21.30. Even though most examples had already been redeemed by that time, the $21.30 cap led to the certificate's further scarcity. As such, they are difficult for collectors to obtain today.
This lot may contain an item not certified by ANACS, PCGS, or NGC. While Scotsman Auction Co. is typically conservative in our descriptions of items not certified by one of these companies, we cannot guarantee our grading estimation will match their grade. We highly recommend that collectors seeking items certified by a third-party grading service only bid on items that have already been certified. No lot can be returned because of a variance in judgment with regards to grade.
