Lot Title:
1854-D "Large D" PCGS AU-53.
Description:
Unexpectedly free of major abrasions, the AU-53 grade assigned by PCGS understates the outstanding appearance of this Dahlonega product. Evidently a little semi-prooflike at the time of striking, substantial brilliance still emanates from the fields, and the strike is gratifyingly defined even at the stars and dentilation on both sides. Definitely nicer than the typically troubled production seen by this revered southern mint!

Ex-Stack's, The Orlando Sale, 1/5/2009: 1053. Cleaned, but not nearly drastically so, with the reverse still showing some nicer patina. Well struck for a Dahlonega coin, as the eagle's feathers are... |
