Lot Title:

1863/2 PCGS PF-64.
|
Description:
|
Though the 1862/1 overdate has been known for business strikes for many decades, Don Taxay discovered the alleged 1863/2 proof overdate only in 1962, and after 46 years, there is still no consensus on whether the underlying remnant of "something" is truly an under-digit, or merely the result of defective punching of the die. PCGS denotes it as 1863/2 on the slab insert, and thus they are comfortable calling it so, and certainly the obvious repunching at the bottom of the numbers is indicative of some additional effort on the part of the mint to really stick those digits into the die. It is tempting to surmise that it was because they wanted to efface previously existing numerals. On the other hand, the Redbook specifically denotes the aberration as a "purported" overdate, and your cataloger is of the personal opinion that it is in fact the result of defective die production and not truly an overdate. Whatever the precise origin of the variety, it is certainly at least scarce.
Technically, this is an exceptionally nice proof that seems to be an obvious candidate for a cameo designation, though PCGS chose not to supply one. The contrast is prominent and unmistakable, emphasized by the fact that the colorless brilliance permits an unlimited level of illumination to really amplify the deviation between the reflective fields and the frothy devices. Probably the imperfect mirrors refuted cameo designation, as it must be admitted that the mirroring is more typical of the commonplace proof - which is to say it is limited in reflectivity. Variety seekers may note that AMERICA is fully repunched, and the overall definition is better than average even for a proof striking.
