Lot Title:
1787 Fugio Cent New Haven Restrike, Copper, NGC MS-65 RB.
Description:
An original "certificate" clipping from 1875 describes this coin in inimitable manner, and it is so neat that your cataloger sees no need to add anything to it. Here it is reproduced verbatim:
"FIRST UNITED STATES CENT, known as the Ring or Franklin Cent. July 6th, 1787, the United States Government ordered the minting of its first coin. Messrs. Broome & Platte of New Haven, Conn., did some part of the coinage. About the year 1860 the undersigned found (and still retains) the original dies among their effects in New Haven. The dies were taken to Waterford, Conn., and a few coins struck for cabinet specimens, the inclosed being one of the re-strikes. Chicago 1875. HORATIO N. RUST."
NGC has graded this example MS-65 RB, the only such example, and it is marvelous, as is the history surrounding it.
