Lot Title: 1817/3 (O-101 R.2) AU, stained.
Description: The 1817/3 is rightfully touted as probably the most conspicuous overdate in the entire Overton series of Capped Bust half-dollars, and for that matter, in an early die state like this, the under-digit is so obvious that the date could almost be mistaken as "1813" at first glance. Evidence of die clashes below the bust and the right end of the motto confirm that this is not the earliest possible "prime" state, but the die cracks present in later stages have not yet developed either. Detail intricacy rises well above the norm, with feather details that are delightfully sharp and deeply sculpted.

Frequently for this issue, Liberty's hair is flat in the central area of the portrait, but not so this example, which also exhibits razor sharp shield lines. Odd lilac-grey coloration stains the obverse and reverse, relieved in areas by lead-grey rub on the highpoints that would appear to indicate an old cleaning, and indeed, there seems to be a lack of mint luster in the fields for such a high grade coin, but patient examination under a good lamp reveals some subtle cartwheel effect within the peripheral areas. There are 1817/3 half dollars available with higher technical grades, but not many competing examples exhibit such outstanding detail. From the Triad Collection.

This lot may contain an item not certified by ANACS, PCGS, or NGC. While Scotsman Auction Co. is typically conservative in our descriptions of items not certified by one of these companies, we cannot guarantee our grading estimation will match their grade. We highly recommend that collectors seeking items certified by a third-party grading service only bid on items that have already been certified. No lot can be returned because of a variance in judgment with regards to grade.
