Lot Title:
1856-C PCGS MS-61.
Description:
In the pursuit of Charlotte gold, there is a certain charming "look" that is usually associated with the 1856-C, and this coin has it. Crude design definition appears on virtually every known example, and of course, defective planchets ruled the day. Breen claimed he had only ever seen a single truly uncirculated survivor, though grading standards of today have allowed more than a dozen examples to enter into the mint state grade range. At hand is an MS-61 as defined by PCGS, one of only three that they have placed in the mint state grades (NGC has certified twelve). Mint luster is unexpectedly decent for the issue, and even a hint of semi-prooflike reflectivity is apparent, more so on the reverse. Sharper examples do exist, but the wait for a finer piece would undoubtedly be a long one.
