1907 High Relief Flat Rim. PCGS MS-62. 1907 High Relief Flat Rim. PCGS MS-62.
Lot Title: 1907 High Relief Flat Rim. PCGS MS-62.
Description: Cursory review of population data for "wire rim" and "flat rim" designations confirms the long held notion that the latter coins are the scarcer type, actually by a large margin. Nevertheless, price guides generally show only a small premium associated with the flat rim coins, undoubtedly because 1907 high relief Saint-Gaudens double-eagles typically serve type purposes only, regardless of rim type. The flat rim was achieved by reducing very slightly the diameter of the original planchet specification in order to correct what was viewed as a striking deficiency by mint officials - the thin fin of metal that tended to erupt around the edge to produce the wire rims on earlier struck coins.

All rim considerations aside, any high relief Saint-Gaudens is an artistic achievement of extraordinary aesthetic quality, and it is always a pleasure to be able to view one in person. The present coin glows with passionate gold color that beautifully dramatizes the highly raised design elements. As is usual, swirls of die polish can be traced throughout the fields on both sides, and some frictional abrasion accounted for in the grade tends to blend in well on the far left side of the obverse. A couple of broad but very shallow oval planchet deficiencies provide a change in surface texture on the extreme left side of the reverse, but their potential effect was attenuated considerably by the multiple strikes required to produce this coin. Persistent examination also reveals barely visible horizontal hairlines beneath the eagle.
