Lot Title:
|
1912-S VF-30.
|
Description:
|
This cataloger may be too conservative to grade this coin. The feather detail on the lower obverse is too weak for an XF-40 grade, but the rest of the coin is insulted by such a low number. The surfaces are remarkably clean for a circulated piece. On the reverse, the breast feathers, shoulder, leg, and head all have XF+ detail, while the wing feathers are weak. I almost want to call this a weakly struck XF-45, but all in all, the grade of VF-30 will have to do. This is one of the tougher issues in the Five Dollar Indians' series, and it is a quality coin to boot.
This lot may contain an item not certified by ANACS, PCGS, or NGC. While Scotsman Auction Co. is typically conservative in our descriptions of items not certified by one of these companies, we cannot guarantee our grading estimation will match their grade. We highly recommend that collectors seeking items certified by a third-party grading service only bid on items that have already been certified. No lot can be returned because of a variance in judgment with regards to grade.

It can be such a close call between AU-58 and MS-62 for sunken-relief gold, and the obverse of this San Francisco piece seems to be every bit of the higher grade. Some fragile wear just shows on the... |

1912-S is a semi-key in the Indian gold half-eagle series for high graded coins. This example displays a fantastic strike and lovely matte texture, but the grade is limited by numerous small ticks... |

A rather scarce date in this series with just a whisper of wear. Its satiny surfaces glisten with a rose blush and exhibit intense design detailing. |
