Lot Title:
1652 "Noe-1, LDS" Pine Tree Shilling, large planchet, PCGS AU-55.
Description:
Thankfully, PCGS has indicated the weight of 71.0 grams on the insert for this lovely Pine Tree Shilling, as it is not possible to estimate weight of a slabbed coin. Exceedingly attractive surface quality reveals pleasing mint luster that cascades across the wavy planchet in a manner quite unlike the axial mint luster displayed by "hammer and anvil" struck coins. The late die state is obvious from the presence of an extensive network of die cracks affecting the date and denomination. Your cataloger has seen other examples in a similar state, though none later, and so it is possible that this is the terminal die state.
Because the manufacturing process involved the cutting with hand shears of the planchet from strips of silver, Pine Tree shillings are frequently found with ragged or erratically edged planchets and are sometimes poorly centered, but the present example is certainly very choice in that regard, with a quasi-round planchet and probably 95% complete legends overall. Only the first couple of letters in MASATHUSETS are lacking completion. Finally, the excellence of the original patina cannot really be improved upon, displaying pewter-grey fields surmounted by hints of navy-blue and lemon-gold iridescence. An absolutely delightful example that is brilliantly suited for type purposes.
