Lot Title:
1802/1 Heraldic Eagle. NGC XF-45.
Description:
Specialists suggest that this is not a true overdate, since no half-eagles were struck bearing the date of 1801. Nonetheless, the underlying digit is plain as can be. In addition, this example presents a beautiful die crack on the reverse, extending diagonally downward from the first "S" in STATES. Aesthetically, this is a coin with charismatic appeal, as the sun-gold surfaces have not been stripped away, nor are there any detracting marks or copper spots. From the Windchime Type Gold Collection.
