Lot Title:

1788 New Jersey Copper, Maris 50-f "head left" type, F-12, recolored
|
Description:
|
There are only three Maris varieties of the New Jersey with the horse's head facing left, and 50-f, the current example, is the most available. As a Redbook sub-type, this is a coin that seldom seems to be available, although that is something of an illusion in that there are so many "head right" examples to choose from by comparison, but it is certainly true that attractive examples are legitimately rare. All examples of 50-f will lack definition at the horse's mane, as they were struck this way, but this coin has a strong, bold date and legends. Some shield definition is lacking as well, as always for the type, but the color and surface seem almost miraculously pleasing. That being said, it is certain that this coin has been expertly and carefully smoothed and recolored with great skill to produce a considerable improvement over what was likely a granular, corroded original appearance.
This lot may contain an item not certified by ANACS, PCGS, or NGC. While Scotsman Auction Co. is typically conservative in our descriptions of items not certified by one of these companies, we cannot guarantee our grading estimation will match their grade. We highly recommend that collectors seeking items certified by a third-party grading service only bid on items that have already been certified. No lot can be returned because of a variance in judgment with regards to grade.
