Description:
|
The strike deficiency of many 1920-S Buffalo nickels was a harbinger of things to come; subsequent issues from San Francisco are notorious for being poorly produced and plagued with striking problems. The present coin exemplifies some of the mint's difficulties, in that the reverse die was used beyond its useful life, as can be seen by the extensive "orange peel effect" that dominates the margins. While the obverse is quite decently defined, the buffalo motif on the reverse is decidedly soft, though it does at least bear a full, bold horn. Dramatic indigo-purple accents enhance the appeal of the obverse, while the reverse is immersed in amber-gold tones.

This is a solid AU Buffalo Nickel. It is problem free and still full of luster. The word Liberty is full on the obverse, and the horn detail is pretty strong on the reverse. |
